Bottom Line

The 99-room Hotel Current is an eco-friendly mid-range property in Long Beach. It's actually a motel, with rooms accessible from the large parking lot, but it works hard to elevate the guests' experience with a business center, heated outdoor pool, and an upscale steakhouse. By no means extravagant, rooms are simple and generally spacious, with modern furniture of a somewhat modular design. The hotel offers free breakfast, Wi-Fi, and a shuttle that runs within a five-mile radius of the property.

Scene

Not fancy -- but fun

While drab on the outside, the Hotel Current goes for a modern sensory experience on the inside. It has a great deal of common space, and encourages guests to lounge. Aromatic scents waft through the lobby, the particular flavor changing every few hours. The lobby is large and set up geometrically, with squares of seating plotted around the entrance. Green leather couches soften the boxy workspace counters. In the lobby and throughout the hotel, there are bright, multicolored modern paintings, all of which have been commissioned from a local artist and bring fun and flair to the space. There are books and board games for borrowing as well.At the back of the motel is a large, curving pool. Cushioned lounge chairs offer a place to relax, including a whole covered area for those who want to stay out of the sun. The patio is surprisingly green, with plants and a few palm trees rising above the water.

Location

Within a short drive of many of the city's sights, with free shuttle service provided

The hotel is right off the Pacific Coast Highway, a heavy trafficked route, which can create noise inside the rooms. In a relatively safe area of town, the hotel is across the street from a country club, and there are a number of casual and fast-food restaurants in the immediate area. The hotel is a short drive (three to five miles) from many Long Beach attractions, including Seal Beach Pier, the Aquarium of The Pacific, the Long Beach Museum of Art, the Long Beach Convention Center, University of Long Beach, and Lakewood and Cerritos Shopping Malls. The Current offers free shuttle service within a five-mile radius of the property.

Rooms

Rooms are simple and modern

The Current has made real aesthetic efforts here, incorporating sharp-lined, dark-colored furniture, abstract art, and sliding bathroom doors. It is certainly a few steps above a typical motel experience, though at times the furniture betrays its IKEA likeness with a propensity for nicks, scrapes, and loose knobs. Bathrooms maintain the same linear design, incorporating more dark wood cabinetry with metallic lines, with the flare of an orange vanity seat in each. There are number of room styles, and rooms may have carpet or wood flooring. Lifestyle Rooms have seating areas and more color, with green and orange throw pillows made from recycled materials. Bathrooms are moderate to large, bright, and include showers, shampoo, and body gel (in wall-mounted dispensers).

Features

A nice restaurant, outdoor pool, and free breakfast and Wi-Fi

The Green Field Churrascura Brazilian Steak House is attached to the Hotel Current, offering a place to grab a surprisingly nice meal or drink from its full bar. The restaurant is large and expansive. The heated pool offers a nice place to lounge, while the hotel's Fun Gallery, which is high-tech and brightly designed, can hold anything from a kid's birthday party to a wedding shower. The hotel also has conference rooms for business-oriented endeavors. There's a free hot breakfast and free Wi-Fi throughout the property, and games and books for borrowing in the lobby.
