Scene
Elegant and eclectic, with stunning period features
Soaring high ceilings, a beautiful stained glass atrium, and original abstract artwork convey an air of elegant luxury, which defines this hotel. Once they find the secret entrance -- the door is discreetly tucked away in the midst of London’s bustling financial district -- guests are met with a welcoming glass of Prosecco, and a dark, mysterious foyer with looming marble columns and floor-to-ceiling rosewood paneling. The foyer then opens up to the lobby, a circular expanse of elegant marble columns, brown leather seating, and geometric lamps. Despite the austere character intrinsic in the architecture -- the Threadneedles was a Victorian banking hall -- the service is friendly and professional, the atmosphere relaxed, and the architecture stunning.
Location
Tucked discreetly into a corner in the heart of the City
A mere three-minute walk from Bank Station in the very midst of London’s financial district, Threadneedles Hotel has a modest doorway tucked discreetly into Threadneedles Street. There are several well-noted restaurants nearby, including high-profile chef Jamie Oliver’s Italian chain, and the fun and funky pan-Asian chain Wagamama. There’s also plenty of luxury shopping in the Royal Exchange, but be aware of the strict closing hours, which generally abide by the City workers’ schedules.
Rooms
Comfortable and inviting, with charming details and abundant luxury amenities
Rooms are comfortable and inviting, with beautiful wood paneling and luxurious linens. A major perk is the lovely marble bathrooms in elegant neutral tones, many of which have a separate bath and shower area. Charming details, such as the leather-handled wardrobes and big "Z" Do Not Disturb signs in furry burgundy felt, add to the boutique feel. The soft refurbishment following Threadneedles inclusion into the Marriott Autograph Collection replaced the rustic wood floors and one-of-a-kind artwork with standard hotel carpeting and generic London tourist photography. Room amenities include iPod docking stations, Nespresso machines, free shoeshines, bathrobes, and slippers, and free mineral water at turndown. There is also a changing selection of books.
Features
Lobby lounge with stunning Victorian features, renowned restaurant and bar with breathtakingly high ceilings
The most striking element of this former banking hall is its original Victorian architecture. The bar of Bonds Restaurant, a grand open space with strikingly high ceilings, retains the original banking counter, which now serves as the bar. The restaurant itself is elegant and traditional, with tall marble columns and rosewood paneling predominating. The hotel also has a variety of meeting rooms in different shapes and sizes, again decked in the charming Threadneedles style, and offers afternoon tea.
