Pros
- Housed in elegant 1820s Georgian townhouse with a discreet entrance
- Central London location, a five minutes' walk from Marble Arch and Hyde Park
- Rooms have mini-fridges and flat-screen TVs with satellite channels
- Hot and cold buffet breakfast included in rate
- Pleasant lounge with iMac computer and small library
- Free Wi-Fi and bottled waters
Cons
- Bathrooms are small, some tiny
- Basement rooms lack natural light
- Standard rooms are cramped
- No tea or coffeemakers in rooms
- Few on-site amenities; no full restaurant or fitness center
Bottom Line
The inconspicuous entrance to this boutique city center hotel immediately gives the place a feeling of exclusivity, which extends to the elegant lobby and lounge areas. Sadly, this doesn't continue to all the rooms, some of which are a bit bland, and have tiny bathrooms to match. The free buffet breakfast is a bonus, and the location is superb, though if you want something a little special in the bedroom you'll need to upgrade, or compare rates with the similarly-priced and nearby Marble Arch hotel by Montcalm.

Discreet boutique hotel housed in elegant Georgian townhouse
Housed in part of a stately row of 1820s Georgian townhouses, the Sumner Hotel is very easy to miss from the outside. Entry is via a buzzer and makes this boutique hotel feel somewhat exclusive -- a mood that continues into the small, neatly-presented lobby, which is decorated with bold, modern art pieces and fresh orchids. Slightly distressed wooden floors, shimmering patterned wallpaper, and the odd period feature creates an upscale yet homey ambience, and very much the peaceful oasis from the buzzing bustling of central London outside. This boutique property attracts mostly couples who don't mind trading a lack of amenities for a prime location.
Location
Central London setting, a five-minute walk away from Marble Arch
The Sumner Hotel is located on a relatively quiet road in central London, less than five minutes walk from Marble Arch tube station and the bustling retail thoroughfare of Oxford Street. Paddington Station is a five-minute taxi ride away, and connects directly to Heathrow Airport. The peaceful expanse of Hyde Park is also five minutes away by foot. Famous Notting Hill Gate is a few tube stops west, while the nightlife of Soho and the West End is about a mile away in the other direction.
Rooms
In-room amenities include free Wi-Fi and flat-screen TVs with satellite channels
The hotel has just 20 rooms, all of which are decorated with a blend of modern and traditional decor and furnishings. In-room amenities include free Wi-Fi, mini-fridges with free water, and wide-screen TVs with satellite channels. Bathrooms are clean, but a bit pokey and lackluster. Deluxe rooms are larger with slightly smarter decor and bespoke furnishings. Front-facing rooms have double-glazing to cut down on any street noise.
Features
Hot and cold breakfast served each morning is included in the rate.
The small, boutique hotel doesn't offer much in the way of facilities, but a hot and cold buffet breakfast is served each morning in the colorful, basement room at no extra charge. An elegant lounge also provides a relaxing space to unwind, offering guests use of an iMac computer and small library. There's no full restaurant or fitness center.
