The hotel sits in one of London's poshest neighborhoods and, as such, an air of exclusivity pervades the property. Built at the turn of the 20th century by retired Major Charles Pawley, who served in the Royal Engineers, the green-stone and red-brick buildings are full of handcrafted detailing, including what is supposedly the world's longest frieze of carved figures. The hotel centers around the lushly landscaped St. James Courtyard, a quiet space with a fountain that's used as a wedding and dining venue in summer months. Interiors are modern and stylish, with colors ranging from bold purple to soft green, glistening wood and marble floors, soft lighting, and framed modern art. The library is cozy but still modern and elegant, with dark-wood floors, leather ottomans, and pale gray armchairs; guests can browse the selection of books lining built-in shelves painted bright orange. The hotel draws a mix of wealthy business travelers and tourists seeking all-out luxury.

The property is in Westminster in Central London, along a major thoroughfare leading to Buckingham Palace, and surrounded by mansions once affiliated with the Royal Court. In other words, this is exclusive territory, and offers considerable perks for business and leisure travelers. There are government buildings in the vicinity, and several major sights are within an easy walk. Buckingham Palace is about five minutes away on foot, while Westminster Abbey and Big Ben are both just over a 10-minute walk. The St. James's Park Tube Station is a five-minute walk, while Victoria station is 10 minutes away on foot. Heathrow Airport is a 30- to 45-minute drive or around an hour away on the Tube. 

Suites are spread over three townhouses, each with its own look and feel. The Minsters Town House is the most modern, and holds the signature suites, including a Jaguar Suite devoted to the luxury automobile, and a Cinema Suite celebrating the history of film. The Kings Town House has a more urban aesthetic, while The Falconers Town House maintains a homier British vibe. There are one-, two-, and three-bedroom suites available, and residences with up to seven bedrooms can be arranged. Decor is modern and luxe, including wood furnishings, plush seating with shimmering or patterned accents, sleek lamps, framed modern art, and attractive carpeting. All suites have full kitchens with top appliances, living rooms, washers and dryers, Nespresso machines, iPod docks, flat-screen TVs, DVD players with DVD libraries, minibars, and butler service. Mineral water and newspapers are free, and 24-hour room service is available. Bathrooms are beautifully lit and finished in marble, and most have shower/tub combos with rainfall showerheads. 

There are five restaurants on-site. Bistro serves British favorites and pan-Asian dishes, while the Michelin-starred Quilon serves southwest coastal Indian cuisine. Kona offers modern takes on traditional Southern European dishes, and features a signature afternoon tea with edible gold-flaked treats and champagne. Bank & Zander includes a bar and restaurant serving dry-aged, hand-cut steaks and various meat and fish dishes prepared in a wood-burning oven. St. James' Courtyard is open for cocktails, afternoon tea, and dinner in the summer months. Guests can have bespoke spa treatments at The Wellness Centre, which includes a 24-hour fitness center with saunas, steam rooms, and personal trainers; the gym also offers yoga and spin classes. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property. Paid parking is available on Horseferry Road, a 10-minute walk away.
