Rooms facing Oxford Street suffer some street noise
This chain hotel veers little from the Radisson mold, with polished though slightly characterless public spaces dotted with Asian decorative flourishes. Location is the main selling point -- bang in the heart of London's busiest shopping area, though tucked away on a relatively quiet street. Rooms are smart yet cozy, with ample amenities, though some are tiny and suffer from a little street noise. The on-site restaurant has a good reputation, though local dining opportunities also abound. However, if an upscale chain isn't what you're after, try the nearby Moncalm -- a similar price, a bit more character, and also just off Oxford Street's buzz and bustle.
Scene
Compact and anonymous lobby contrasts with gorgeous period staircase
Although housed in a towering, Georgian-style building, the Radisson Blu Edwardian Berkshire Hotel has a rather close and compact lobby. Finished in dark wood with marble floors, the scene is smart and functional, if a little anonymous. Like most Radissons, decor is predominantly Oriental in flavor (reputedly chosen by the wife of the CEO) and includes tasteful traditional prints and sculpture. While some public spaces are on the bland side, there is a beautiful period staircase with polished wood paneling and an old grandfather clock worth skipping the lift for. Clientele tends towards those in London on business -- especially those in the fashion industry -- as well as tourists keen to splash the cash on high street shopping sprees.
Location
Just off central London's busiest shopping street
Tucked away on a road just off busy Oxford Street, this hotel could not be any closer to central London's bustling shopping area. However, as it's on a no-through road, there is little passing traffic and the hotel remains quiet. The nearest Underground station is Bond Street, two minutes away, while most of the city center attractions are well within walking distance -- Marble Arch and Hyde Park are both 10 minutes away on foot. The renowned department store Selfridges is just a couple blocks away, and the swanky designer boutiques of Regent Street are a five-minute walk away.
Rooms
Smart yet cozy rooms with marble bathrooms and free Wi-Fi
The hotel's standard rooms are decorated in dark, neutral tones with modern furnishings and wool carpeting. Beds are topped with velvet throws and feature padded crocodile-effect headboards and bespoke mattresses. In-room technology includes free Wi-Fi and Samsung Smart TVs with integrated entertainment systems. Bathrooms are finished with Sicilian marble and provide luxury toiletries, but some are on the musty side. Some rooms overlook Oxford Street and so suffer from some noise.
Features
Light on amenities, but on-site restaurant worth a look
The hotel's second-floor restaurant, Scoff & Banter, offers a menu of no-nonsense, modern British cooking in smartly designed surrounds: handsome wood, elegant mirrors, and maroon leather seating. There is also a ground floors' lounge bar -- with wraparound animal-print couches -- serving drinks and light meals. Otherwise, the hotel is pretty light on amenities, though in-room spa treatments like massage and reflexology are available. And although there is no gym on-site, guests have access to one in a sister hotel a short walk away. Wi-Fi is also available throughout the hotel, and business services are on offer.
