Sophisticated and charming, the boutique 41 Hotel is a member of the Red Carnation Group. The attractive Executive Lounge is full of sultry black velvet, supple leather couches, and abundant mahogany (check-in is handled in this residents-only lounge). Despite an odd layout -- there's an obstacle course of a foyer, elevator to the fifth floor, and winding hallway before guests reach the check-in desk -- this hotel has a feel of endless pampering and flawless hospitality.

With Buckingham Palace directly north and one of London’s busiest transport hubs directly south, 41 Hotel is conveniently located for seeing London's main attractions. There are several restaurant choices on the same block as the hotel, but they mostly serve travelers in transit -- guests might want to venture away from Victoria Station for more culture or character.

Rooms at the 41 Hotel London are chic and striking with a black and white color palette. The traditional and the contemporary blend seamlessly here: a Victorian armchair updated with a racy black and white zebra print manages to look natural next to a dark mahogany cupboard. Rooms are full of thoughtful extras, from work stationery in the desk drawer (including everything from post it notes to staplers, scissors, paper clips, rulers, and rubber bands) to luxury accessories in the closet (umbrellas, slippers, shoe brush, and shoe horn). Inviting bathrooms have Penhaligon's toiletries. There's also a pillow menu, comprehensive duvet menu, butler service on request, and free "snacks" that include smoked salmon, quiche, and Haagen Dazs ice cream.

The Executive Lounge is beautifully decorated with mahogany-paneled walls and exquisite antiques (plus the shelves are stocked with books and the chess boards are set), while the hotel’s boardroom is decked in similar traditional, classy style. Residents also have free access to the many dining and lounging options at its sister hotel next door, the Rubens -- including a leopard-themed champagne bar and a safari-chic restaurant.
