Bottom Line

The Hanover Hotel Victoria is a mid-range option near the Victoria Station, on a quiet street of Victorian row houses. It’s a
15-minute walk to the banks of the Thames River and museums
like Tate Britain. The hotel has 39 simple guest rooms with small flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi. A continental breakfast is included in the room rate, though it can be very busy. There’s no
bar, restaurant, elevator, or fitness center, and not all rooms can be air conditioned, but its central London location and
relatively low prices can be a good value. However, for a bit more cash the Georgian House across the street has far more style.

Scene

Victorian townhouse setting holds a simple tourist hotel

The exterior of this four-story Victorian townhouse looks smart and
impressive. Guests walk up three steps between potted ornamental trees and grand white pillars into this relatively basic hotel. On the right hand side
is the bright lobby. It's a simple room with large windows, leather
armchairs with Union flag pillows, a crystal chandelier, vending machine, and a coffee table
laden with a large variety of newspapers and magazines. The reception desk is
small and marble-topped and there is a selection of tourist information
leaflets next to it. There are no other common areas beyond a spartan breakfast room that has a cafeteria vibe. It’s worth noting that there’s no elevator here, which may be an issue for those on higher floors and guests with mobility issues. The hotel attracts a range of tourists, including many families, as
the larger room options and central location are convenient.

Location

Central London neighborhood near Victoria Station

The hotel is located on a typically grand London residential street lined with tall, stately Victorian facades and other family run hotels.
It's a 10-minute walk to Victoria Station, which provides access to buses, trains, and the tube, as well as connections to Gatwick Airport in around 35 minutes. Heathrow Airport will take around 40 minutes to reach by taxi depending on traffic, or up to an hour by public transportation. The hotel is near a variety
of London sights as well. The Thames River is a 10-minute walk from the hotel, where there are a wide range of pubs, bars, and restaurants. It’s
an eight-minute walk to the Apollo Victoria Theater, 10 minutes to the stunning
Westminster Cathedral, and 15 minutes to Tate Britain and the Saatchi Gallery. Buckingham
Palace and St. James' Park are a 20-minute walk for guests who don't mind using their feet a bit more. All of London's main shopping
areas -- Oxford Street, Bond Street, and Kings Road can
be reached by bus within 30 minutes.

Rooms

Basic rooms with contemporary accents, but bathrooms are a little dated

Guest rooms at the Hanover Hotel Victoria are available in Single, Double, Triple, Quad, and Family (sleeps five people) configurations. All 39 rooms include free Wi-Fi, a DVD player,
coffeemaker, and small flat-screen TVs that start at just 15 inches. Some, but not all, of the rooms have
air-conditioning and there's a surcharge to use it -- previous
guests have commented that rooms without air-conditioning can get quite hot and stuffy. Rooms
are decorated in a modern, but basic, style, with mid-tone wood-veneer headboards and furniture, mostly bare neutral walls, and shiny damask-print curtains and throw pillows in pale blue and
gold hues. All rooms have small en-suite bathrooms with black-and-white tiles and stand-up showers -- the look is a little dated and hairdryers are oddly mounted outside of the bathrooms in some guest rooms. We also spotted some dirty grout in some shower units.

Features

Free continental breakfast, Wi-Fi, and maps of the city

The hotel offers a free continental buffet breakfast. There’s a decent range of food on offer including croissants, bread, cheese, jam, cereals,
yogurt, fruit, juice, tea, coffee, and hot chocolate, though the breakfast room has a drab cafeteria vibe, and it can get crowded and picked over. For snacks and drinks
throughout the day, there’s a vending machine in the lounge, which also has a TV and newspapers. The hotel offers a 24-hour front desk and laundry
service, and free maps of London plus tourist information are provided to all guests
on arrival. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel and airport shuttles are available for a fee.
