The upper-middle-range, 40-room Scallywags Resort is a trendy, quiet property along Gili Trawangan’s busy southeastern coast. All rooms are modern and attractive, outfitted with kettles, minibars, and air-conditioning. Upgraded units have private plunge pools or outdoor showers, but some lack terraces altogether. A peaceful outdoor pool with adjacent bar, well-regarded restaurant facing the ocean and serving free breakfasts, and a simple spa are all on-site, but there is no gym. Scuba diving, bike rentals, and water activities can all be arranged by staff. Travelers looking for a similar property located on the quieter side of the island should check out the Aston Sunset Beach Resort, though its rooms aren't quite as stylish.
Scene
Modern property with stylish decor and ocean-view facilities
Set along the azure waters of Gili Trawangan, Scallywags has a distinct beach vibe, with a popular seaside barbecue restaurant and bar. The design is contemporary and stylish, with colorful portraits throughout, modern furniture in mostly neutral hues, and lots of lovely stone elements. A number of rooms overlook the ocean and street, and more tranquil rooms are off of a stone-lined path, though overall the atmosphere is quiet and relaxed. A pretty swimming poo and spa appeal to couples, while the Scallywags diving excursions (off another island) lure lots of scuba enthusiasts.
Location
Beachside resort, a short walk from restaurants and bars
Scallywags is set on the busy southeastern side of Gili Trawangan, the largest of the three tourist islands off of the coast of Lombok. The resort, which faces the beach, is surrounded by restaurants and bars, and it has a private boat landing. Daily speedboats from Bali take around one hour from Padang Bai or two and a half hours from Serangan. Alternatively, the island can be reached by a 15-minute speedboat ride from mainland Lombok. There are regular flights to Lombok International Airport from Bali, Jakarta, and Surabaya, as well as Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. Scallywags can arrange a pick-up service from the airport to the resort’s private marina in Telok Kodek (two hours). Guests arriving at Gili Trawangan’s ferry terminal can get a "cidomo" (horse-drawn carriage) to the resort, or walk five minutes. Gili Trawangan is relatively small and can be circled in around an hour and a half by horse cart or bicycle, the latter of which can be rented from the resort. There is no motorized transport on the island.
Rooms
Modern rooms with attractive decor, AC, and minibars
Rooms are modern and stylish, decorated with neutral-tone furnishings in natural materials, colorful portraits, and minimal embellishment. Although some rooms overlook the ocean, these rooms are subject to the most noise and lack balconies. Also on the downside, some rooms have mediocre vistas. Another disparity between rooms is the bathroom, which can be either small and drab or large and outdoor with verdant greenery. Additionally, some have lush private outdoor spaces or plunge pools. Standard amenities include air-conditioning, open wardrobes with safety deposit boxes, well-stocked minibars, tea- and coffee-making facilities, flat-screen TVs with DVD players, desks, and rainfall showers. Toiletries and bathrobes are provided.
Features
Pleasant swimming pool and popular restaurant serving free breakfasts
The resort offers an appealing, quiet swimming pool flanked by umbrella-shaded, cushioned loungers and verdant greenery. There is also a small pool bar that serves light meals, soft drinks, and alcohol. Overlooking the ocean, Lombok’s coastline, and Mt. Rinjani, the Scallywags Seafood Bar & Grill offers a popular nightly seafood barbecue. Set directly on the white sand, the restaurant also serves free buffet breakfasts that receive positive reviews, particularly the pancakes. Another bar is located here. The resort’s ocean-themed Wagwan Spa features calming blues and revitalizing whites, and it provides a range of treatments, from massage and facials, to manicures and pedicures. As there is no motorized transport on the island, guests can bicycles on-site. There is no gym, however. In terms of water activities, the resort offers snorkeling equipment, and Scallywag Divers can organize PADI open-water courses and single dives. The center is located at the resort’s sister hotel on the neighboring Gili Air, and Scallywags provides free transport to the location. Surfing and glass-bottom boat rides can also be arranged.
