Bottom Line

Set along Mangsit beach on the island of Lombok, the Qunci Villas Hotel is an upscale retreat that mostly attracts couples looking for a romantic getaway. The 75 appealing room options include rooms with private pools and three-bedroom villas set atop a hill. All earth-tone rooms have minibars, safes, and furnished outdoor spaces. A good range of features includes two restaurants, free breakfasts, ocean-view bar, spa offering couples' massages, and three swimming pools -- one adult-only. There are no kid-centric facilities or gym, however. Also note the beach is narrow and can be rocky. It's worth comparing rates with the more striking and smaller 40-room Puri Mas Boutique Resort & Spa.

Scene

Romantic beachside retreat in tranquil setting, aside from hawkers and mosque calls to prayer

With views of Mount Agung in the neighboring Bali and the turquoise waters of the Lombok Strait, this beachfront property offers a romantic setting geared toward couples. The hotel is dominated by peaked roofs, wooden elements, and warm earth tones interspersed with colorful artwork, pond features, and stone sculptures. A winding stone path connects the three ocean-view infinity pools, other facilities, and the rooms. While the ambience is generally relaxed and tranquil, the peace can be disrupted by beach vendors trying to sell their goods and calls to prayer from a nearby mosque.

Location

On the beach, a short walk to restaurants and five-minute drive to Senggigi center

Qunci Villas Hotel is located along Mangsit beach in Senggigi, a strip of tourist beaches on the west coast of Lombok. There are several restaurants and shops within walking distance of the hotel, and Senggigi center can be reached in five minutes by car. The hotel is an hour's drive from Lombok International Airport and flights from Bali to Lombok take around 20 minutes. Gili Trawangan can be reached by a 15-minute speedboat ride from Lombok, and from there it takes two and a half hours to get to Bali’s Serangan Harbour, or one hour to Padang Bai Harbour.

Rooms

Charming rooms with outdoor spaces; some with private pools

Though ranging from simplistic rooms to sleek villas, all rooms are decorated in a warm earth-tone palette of polished wood, maroon-hued textiles, and modern art that includes sculptures and paintings. Rooms are classified into three types: Ocean View, Partial Ocean View, and Garden View. The Ocean View Rooms are situated right on the waterfront, while the others are set amid the lush grounds. One- and Two-Bedroom Pool Rooms have private, decent-sized swimming pools surrounded by partly shaded decks with daybeds. All rooms come with minibars, air-conditioning, tea- and coffee-making facilities, free Wi-Fi, bathrobes, and sandals. While TVs aren't provided, these and DVD players are available upon request. The semi-open-air bathrooms come with pebbled floors, showers, and free toiletries. Also standard are furnished patios, though some are next to public pathways. Additionally, the ground-floor rooms often have to keep their curtains drawn as guests passing by can see inside. It's also worth noting that some rooms experience early morning noise from a mosque. The stunning One-, Two- and Three-Bedroom Luxury Villas are perched on a hill away from the main part of the hotel, and offer scenic views of the ocean and Mount Agung. All feature private swimming pools, kitchens, and living rooms, while the three-bedroom comes with a library and exercise room. All villas are decorated with exquisite artworks and large windows to make the most of the magnificent views. Free transport down to the hotel is provided.

Features

Two restaurants and three ocean-view infinity pools, but no gym

This beachfront hotel takes advantage of its position with many features oriented around the sea. As the ocean can be rocky in this area, there are three gorgeous infinity-edge pools overlooking the water and surrounded by padded loungers and umbrellas. They include the Quatic Atlantic, smoke-free Quatic Pacific, and the adult-only Quatic Hindia. Though attractive, the beach in front of the hotel is narrow, and guests have complained of insistent hawkers while at the pool or on the beach. The spa offers a range of treatments in rooms complete with private courtyards containing soaking tubs carved from Javanese stone. Unfortunately, there are no gym or kid-centric facilities on-site. The open-air Quali Seafood Restaurant and Quah Mediterranean Restaurant both serve three meals a day and have views toward the sea. The hotel’s well-reviewed a la carte breakfast is included in room rates and can be served at either restaurant or brought to rooms. Set facing the beach, the Nooq Lounge Bar is popular for its tapas and Thai specialties. Guests can also dine at one of the tables on the deck or directly along the beach. The hotel organizes regular events, including beachfront barbecue buffets and live music; "pasar malam," or a night market with local food stalls and traditional drumming; and traditional Sasak dance dinners. Wi-Fi is free throughout.
