Bottom Line

The 65-room Lac Salin Spa and Mountain Resort is a relatively upscale hotel set on the edge of Livigno town center in the Italian Alps. The Eastern-inspired spa provides an impressive range of chakra-based treatments and plenty of private space to unwind. The heated indoor pool is larger than most. Rooms are modern, with furnished balconies and mountain views. Some interiors, however, are lacking a certain coziness and rates aren't that cheap, so if you're looking for somewhere with a bit more alpine charm try Hotel Capriolo across the road.

Scene

Modern take on an Alpine chalet with clean, contemporary interiors

The grandfather of the family behind this hotel first opened its doors to the public in Livigno in 1962, and since, the company has expanded to include three other properties. It's the third generation of the Giacomelli family who now run the Lac Salin Spa and Mountain Resort, in which glass, wood, and stone combine to create a contemporary take on a traditional mountain chalet. Inside, too, the feel is smart and modern, with clean lines and functional furnishings -- veering away from the cozy alpine ambience typical of similar hotels, which can make the interiors feel a little un-cozy in comparison. People who prefer a contemporary aesthetic will likely be pleased, however.

Location

On the outskirts of Livigno center and next to the Mottolino ski lifts

The hotel is positioned about half a mile from the pedestrian center of Livigno, a small town located in the Italian Alps, near the Swiss border. There are ski lifts a couple minutes' walk away, or less on skis, which connect to the pistes of Mottolino and Carousel 3000. The nearest train station on the Italian side is Tirano, about 45 miles away, or St. Moritz on the Swiss side is 27 miles away. Milan's Malpensa Airport is about four hours away by car, while Innsbruck Airport is two-and-a-half hours.

Rooms

Modern rooms with furnished balconies and views of the surrounds

The hotel's 65 spacious rooms are decorated in fresh, contemporary tones with plenty of alpine-style blond wood and simple, modern furnishings. The styling in the suites was inspired by the seven chakras, while all rooms follow feng shui principles and have 100 percent natural materials. Free Wi-Fi and flat-screen TVs come standard, and contemporary bathrooms all come with hair dryers and robes. Each room also has a balcony looking out on to the surrounding peaks.

Features

Impressive spa facilities and treatments drawing on Eastern philosophy

The hotel's highlight is its spa area which draws heavily on the Eastern philosophy of the seven chakras and has a range of treatments bases on its principles. The spa also has various saunas and steam baths, as well as a tanning bed. Guests also have access to a heated indoor swimming pool and hot tub. Two restaurants can be found on-site, the Lac Salin Restaurant serves fine-dining, while Stua da Legn is more cozy and informal. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout and garage parking is also free of charge.
