Bottom Line

The Richmond is a
classy, upscale hotel located in the center of Liverpool within walking
distance of all its main attractions and transport links. There's more than a
little glitz and glamor in the interior design, which extends to the bar and
restaurant, though not so much to the guest rooms -- which can also suffer
street noise. In-room amenities, however, are excellent and apartments can be
configured complete with fully equipped kitchens. Wi-Fi as well as in-room bottled water and milk are free. Although not cheap, rates are a good value; the similarly priced chain hotels in the area aren't half
as ritzy.

Scene

Stately 19th-century building belying a glitzy, and somewhat decadent, vibe

The Richmond is
an independent hotel housed in an imposing and stately 19th-century building
that was once occupied by the Transport Department of Liverpool Corporation and
is now Grade II heritage protected. Stepping though a pair of tall, wrought
iron gates, the reception area immediately projects the mood of restrained
decadence -- there are marble floors and tabletops, flocked velvet wallpaper, and a
polished reception desk complete with coat of arms, all in smart black and
white scheme and illuminated by chandeliers and ceiling spotlights. The glitzy interior
design styling continues through to white leather furnishings and culminates in
the Liberace-esque white grand piano that sits under the hotel's central atrium
and skylight.

Location

Located within 10 minutes' walk of most of central Liverpool

The hotel is located
on a relatively busy road in the Hatton Garden neighborhood of central Liverpool.
The "Friends" sitcom-inspired Central Perk coffee shop is just steps away,
while most of the city center's shops, restaurants, and bars are within 10
minutes' walk. The renowned Cavern Club is also just 10 minutes away on foot,
while the city's rejuvenated docks area -- with the Tate Liverpool art gallery
and Beatles Story museum -- is just over a mile from the hotel. The nearest
train station is Moorfields, a five-minute stroll away, while the John Lennon
Airport is 20 to 30 minutes by car.

Rooms

Plush but relatively sober rooms and apartments with fully equipped kitchens

The Richmond offers Classic Rooms and Suites, and these can also be configured in different ways to make two-, three-,
or four-bedroom apartments. Decor is plush, with red velvet fabrics, padded
headboards, and gilt-framed mirrors, though without quite matching the level of
glitz in and around the lobby. Amenities impress with fast, free Wi-Fi,
50-inch flat-screen TVs, and minibars with free mineral water and fresh milk. Marble-clad bathrooms provide Molten Brown products and shower/tub combos with rain showerheads. Apartments also
include fully equipped kitchens for self-catering, as well as lounge and dining
areas. The relatively busy road out front means some street-facing rooms get a
little traffic noise.

Features

Free access to Roman-style health club and baths opposite

The hotel's R Bar
& Brasserie provides a menu of classic British cooking prepared with seasonal
produce served up in opulent surrounds. A breakfast buffet of hot and cold items is served daily (for a fee), and the bar is a nice spot for an evening cocktail. Guests over 18 have free access to the
Roman-style Olympus Health Club just across the road, offering hot and cold
plunge pools, sauna, and steam rooms as well as a range of massage treatments
and a gym. Meeting rooms are available, including a larger space hosting up to 250 people, and the more intimate Florentyna for private meetings or dinners of up to 26 guests. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel and parking is available nearby,
though is expensive.
