Bottom Line

Tryp Lisboa Oriente is a contemporary three-and-a-half-pearl property built in the Park of Nations for the 1998 World's Fair. It's convenient to the airport, trade shows, concerts, and casinos but most tourist attractions are at least 20 minutes away by car. The 207 spacious and stylish rooms have views that include the sea, train lines, and the city. A free breakfast buffet is served in a cheery room whose walls are embellished with international passport stamps, and there's a stylish lobby bar with windows overlooking the street. The hotel also offers free shuttle service to the airport with advance reservations. For a hotel in the same neighborhood with a pool, check rates at Tivoli Oriente.

Scene

Bright and spacious hotel geared to business travelers

The Tryp Lisboa Oriente was the first hotel built in the Park of Nations for the World's Fair of 1998 and it takes its style cues from that expo. A large mural depicting Expo '98 sits behind three dark wood reception desks. The lobby has a high cove ceiling with high hat lights. Large plants sit around clusters of low-back, contemporary chairs and sofas. There are three large saltwater aquariums on the facing wall of the mezzanine, visible from the first floor. The hotel's bar, in a palette of black, white, and turquoise features low tables with velvet stools and a banquette edged with plants that faces the street. Breakfast is served in a cheerful room within walls flecked with passport stamps, tailored cream-fabric chairs, and teardrop-shaped pendant lights. The overall effect is a clean, bright property with touches of style and efficiency that are ideal for business travelers.

Location

Near a casino, concert venue, and center for trade shows -- but far from tourist sites

The Tryp Lisboa Oriente is in an area that's convenient to business and cultural sites but not near the popular tourist attractions. Oriente Station is two minutes on foot, and the train lines are visible from some guest rooms. The Meo Arena is a four-minute walk. It's a seven-minute walk to a casino and nine minutes on foot to the FIL, the international fair Lisbon. It's a 10-minute walk to the Pavilion of Knowledge, a contemporary science museum. The Lisbon Oceanarium, reflected in the lobby mural, is a 15-minute walk. To reach the charming and bustling Alfama neighborhood, it's a 14-minute drive or 16 minutes by train. The Calouste Gulbenkian Museum is a 16-minute drive or 28 minutes by train. It's an 18-minute drive or a 41-minute train ride to the historic Praca de Comerico. It's a 21-minute drive or a 25-minute train ride to the Castelo de Sao Jorge. It's 21 minutes by car or 37 minutes by train to the Rua Augusta for shopping. Belem Tower, a historic military site, is a 22-minute drive or 55-minute train ride. The historic Rossio Square is a 23-minute drive or 37-minutes by train.  The naval museum is 26 minutes by car or a one-hour train ride. The Lisbon Portela Airport is conveniently located 10 minutes by car or 23 minutes by train.

Rooms

Bright rooms with contemporary decor and minibars; some with sea views or elliptical machines

The Tryp Lisboa Oriente has spacious, airy rooms with large windows that span almost the entire wall. Views include the cityscape, including rail lines; some rooms have sea views. Decor is contemporary and fresh: light wood floors with area rugs, taupe walls, and clean-lined furniture. Large photos with images of nature, such as close-ups of blossoms or bark, hang on the walls. Beds, in white linens with throws and accent pillows in various contrast colors, sit on fabric-covered frames. The windows feature sheers and blackout drapes. Rooms have air-conditioning, safes, flat-screen TVs, and minibars. Free water and newspapers are also provided. Higher-category rooms have their own elliptical machines for exercise. Bathrooms have attractive beige marble with vessel sinks and modern fittings. Tub/shower combinations are covered with glass shields. Hairdryers and bidets are included, and the toiletries are the hotel's own brand. Note that past guests have complained that noise reaches the lower floors, and that, with the exception of premium rooms, there are no kettles for tea- or coffee-making. Smoking rooms are available on their own floor.

Features

Freebies of breakfast, Wi-Fi, and airport shuttle service

There are a few premium extras at the Tryp Lisboa Oriente. The Wi-Fi is free throughout the property, and with a 24-hour reservation, there are three free daily shuttle trips to the airport. A breakfast buffet, including fruits, eggs, and meat dishes, is offered in a room off the lobby, where tapas are also served later in the day. There's a lobby bar for beer and wine as well. A small business center with computers, fax, and copy machines is on the mezzanine floor. There are also meeting rooms, some with natural light, with audio-visual equipment. Parking is available for a fee. Dry cleaning and laundry services are also available for a fee. The front desk is staffed 24-hours, and there are concierge services, including for tours and tickets. There is an electronic board listing weather and flight information and an interactive exhibit on Expo '98 in the lobby. Babysitting is also available for a fee. The property is handicapped accessible, and smoking is permitted in designated smoking rooms, which are separated off on their own floor.
