Bottom Line

The historic Solar Do Castelo is different than any other hotel in Lisbon. The rooms are quaint (if not luxurious), and the breakfast buffet offers a ton of options for hungry guests. But the real reason tourists stay at this hotel is the location; not only is it convenient to numerous sights and neighborhoods in the city, but it is the only hotel within the walls of the medieval village surrounding St. George's Castle. It's quiet, and rich in history -- the hotel has preserved a large part of the architecture, as well as adding a small museum of artifacts off of the lobby. And a real highlight is the outdoor terrace, where peacocks congregate. None of the 14 rooms are decorated the same, and some feel more upscale than others. But all offer free Wi-Fi and plenty of charm.

Solar Do Castelo, a Lisbon Heritage Collection

Location

In the Alfama area, within the walls of the small medieval village surrounding St. George's castle

The Solar Do Castelo is located in the Alfama area, a Moorish neighborhood. Essentially fishing town with great fado clubs, Alfama has tons of history, with cobblestone streets and historic buildings. Like Bairro Alto, it can also be a bit dangerous at nights but the hotel is in a generally safe area within the walls of the medieval village surrounding St. George's Castle.

Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, is a beautiful, colorful city overlooking the Atlantic. Like Rome and San Francisco, Lisbon is a city built on seven hills; but it has an Athens-like vibe with white-washed, red-roofed buildings, a fishing community, and laid-back people. Though many buildings were destroyed in the Great Earthquake of 1755, Lisbon still has a rich history (including historic buildings and cobblestone streets).

Originally referred to as the "eighth wonder of the world," Lisbon was a major importer of exotic goods from Europe and Asia. But nowadays, Lisbon can be overlooked due to the popularity of the quaint, seaside beach towns nearby. But those who love the city can tell visitors the many things they miss when skipping over Lisbon; it is a city of iconic historic buildings (such as St. George's Castle), extensive museums, and fabulous shopping -- particularly for gold, silver, and antiques.

  • 18-minute drive to Lisbon Portela Airport, or 43 minutes via public transportation
  • 2-minute walk to St. George's Castle
  • 8-minute walk to Casa dos Bicos
  • 9-minute walk to the heart of Baixa
  • 10-minute walk to Rossio, a main square
  • 10-minute walk to Praca de Comercio, a beautiful plaza facing the river
  • 11-minute walk to the Santa Justa historic elevator, with great views
  • 12-minute walk to Chiado
  • 15-minute walk to Avenida de Liberdade
  • 16-minute walk to Barrio Alto
  • 10-minute drive to the National Museum of Ancient Art, or 23 minutes via public transportation
  • 17-minute drive to the the Coach Museum, the largest museum of royal coaches in the world, or 35 minutes via public transportation
  • 19-minute drive to the Belem Tower, or 41 minutes via public transportation
  • 19-minute drive to the Jeronimos Monastery, or 31 minutes via public transportation
