The opulent Pestana Palace is a luxury hotel in a gorgeous 19th-century palace. Features are expansive, and include an elegant Portuguese restaurant, a beautiful outdoor pool, a spa with a sauna and indoor pool, and a fitness center. The property also has an impressive series of lounges and living rooms, with ornate design, antiques, and lovely artwork. There's also a parlor bar, and in warm weather, guests can have a drink at the pavilion bar overlooking the garden. Even Standard Rooms are spacious and elegant, and royalty-worthy suites may have large furnished balconies with beautiful views and huge bathrooms with claw-foot tubs and separate showers. The hotel is not within walking distance to most of the city's attractions; it's around a 15-minute drive (or 10 euro cab ride) to the historic city
center. Guests warn that the drinks are pricey and there
aren’t any irons in the rooms. For more modern accommodations, guests should check out Myriad by SANA Hotels, a luxury property next to the river with funky, modern rooms and a bar with a riverside patio. Wi-Fi is free throughout.
Scene
Luxury palace hotel hosting upscale clientele
The entrance to the luxurious Pestana Palace Hotel is marked by a
carved stone and iron gate. Inside, guests will find a gorgeous property with
stone walkways cutting through palms and tropical plants and lovely 19th-century buildings with pale yellow walls and Juliet balconies. The dramatic
architecture inside the lobby includes marble floors and a grand, double
staircase. The restaurant in the hotel, Valle-Flôr, is especially opulent with
large columns and a frescoed ceiling with gold elements. In the bar, oil
painting portraits decorate the wall while chairs and couches in purple,
fuchsia, and blue offer guests a spot to conduct business meetings or relax and
enjoy the live piano music in the evenings. Outside, the pool has a lagoon-like
feel with tropical plants and cave-like walkway with arched openings. In warmer
weather, guests can enjoy drinks and snacks at the pavilion bar overlooking the
pool. This hotel is pure luxury, with an opulent atmosphere that inspires guests to get dressed up for meals and drinks.
Location
Residential area, a 15-minute drive from city center
Pestana
Palace is located in a residential area about a 15-minute drive west of the city
center. There aren’t a lot of restaurants nearby. It’s within walking distance
to the Congress Center. The hotel offers a free shuttle with two morning and
two afternoon departures to the city center, but the shuttle can often be full. A taxi ride to the historic center takes about 15 minutes and costs approximately 10 euros. It’s
around a 20-minute drive to the airport.
Rooms
Spacious Standard Rooms with elegant decor and suites fit for a king
Standard Rooms at Pestana
Palace are spacious, plush, and elegant with framed artwork, modern patterned carpeting, and
wooden furnishings including desks and bureaus. Bathrooms have shower/tub combos (and are not the highlight -- the lack of separate tubs and showers is a tad disappointing for an advertised five-star hotel),
makeup mirrors, bathrobes, and generous amenity kits with Castelbel Porto toiletries. Nice design touches include intricate headboards and cozy upholstered chairs. Opulent suites are
available with over-the-top furnishings such as candelabras, gold wall
embellishments, and big tapestry rugs as well as furnished balconies offering
lovely views and huge bathrooms with claw-foot tubs, separate showers, and L’Occitane
toiletries. Suites are more intricate than the Standard Rooms, with wall and ceiling carvings that reveal the building's past as a 19th-century palace. All rooms have free Wi-Fi and small, flat-screen TVs.

and hot tub, and a fitness center with two treadmills, a stationary bike, and
weight machines. There’s a spa with a sauna, showers, and body and facial

private meetings and events. Several lounges and living rooms (the Japanese Living Room, the Green Living Room, the Angel's Living Room) are available for lounging and informal meetings. There’s an internet corner with one computer and a
