The three-and-a-half-pearl Mercure Lisboa is located in the quiet Campolide neighborhood alongside many other business hotel chains. It's about a 30-minute train ride into the historic heart of Lisbon, but many banks have their headquarters here, meaning easy commutes for business travelers. The popular Museu Calouste Gulbenkian is also a 15-minute walk away. The 104 clean rooms are modern and have a restrained style, featuring air-conditioning and flat-screen TVs. Upgraded rooms have pod coffeemakers that are a nice perk. The well-sized rooftop pool is heated and roofed during the winter, making it comfortable year-round. For a more child-friendly atmosphere, the Novotel Lisboa down the street has a children's pool and indoor/outdoor playgrounds in addition to its business amenities.
Scene
Modern hotel for business travelers and tourists who don't mind commuting to sights
Located in a part of Lisbon that's more modern than the gorgeous cobblestone-clad historic neighborhoods near the river, the Mercure Lisboa lives up to its business-hotel reputation. First impressions are corporate, though the lobby and interiors are fresh and modern, done in color-block shades of red, black, white, and other neutral hues. A panorama elevator provides an impressive view of the soaring Aqueduto das Aguas Livres -- a nearby historic site -- while black-and-white images of the structure line the hallways, giving this chain property a local touch. Its blend of business-friendly features -- like its many naturally lit meeting spaces -- coupled with its location near corporate offices, make this a popular choice for business travelers. While the city's main tourist sights are a hike from here, the hotel's proximity to public transportation, the Lisbon Zoo, and its sizable pool mean that families and couples are also frequent guests at the Mercure Lisboa.
Location
A 10-minute walk to the zoo and public transportation in modern and quiet business district
The hotel's Campolide neighborhood is quiet, modern, and well-located near public transportation. Many banks and other business headquarters -- and the Instituto Portugues de Oncologia -- are situated within 10-minute walk from the hotel. It's not particularly exciting out here for tourists, though the city's zoo is also only 10 minutes away on foot and the stunning gardens and art collections of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation are a 15-minute walk from the property. Hop-on/hop-off tour buses are easily accessible in front of the hotel, and trains to Sintra stop at the nearby Sete Rios station, five minutes away on foot. The Azul subway line at Jardim Zoologico and Praca de Espanha is a 10-minute walk from the hotel, and it will take 30 minutes to reach the touristy Baixa-Chiado area. Expect a 10- to 20-minute ride to the airport from here by taxi, depending on traffic.
Rooms
Spacious, contemporary rooms with flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning, and minibars
Air-conditioned rooms at the Mercure Lisboa are done in a sober contemporary style that's in line with this chain's corporate ethos. Dressed in light and/or dark woods plus neutral tones, the look is simple, though small details like street-scene line art on accent walls adds a touch of local flare. Windows are small and let in a minimal amount of light with an okay view of the aqueduct or main street, but the rooms are otherwise spacious and well-equipped. All categories come with the option of a king-size bed and are equipped with work desks, minibars, flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi. Privilege Rooms and Suites with separate living rooms also come with in-room drink services and better amenities, including an espresso machine, bathrobe, and slippers. Modern bathrooms -- outfitted in glass, porcelain, and chrome -- are clean and roomy, with hairdryers and bidets. They include bathtub/shower combos and a decent amount of counter space for storing toiletries.
Features
Year-round rooftop pool, views of the aqueduct, plus a bar, restaurant, and breakfast buffet
The rooftop pool at the Mercure Lisboa is well-sized, temperature-regulated, and has a retractable canopy that helps insulate the pool during cooler seasons so that it's available year-round. Towels are available for free near the pool entrance, and sun beds line the edge of the pool, though they can in high demand during peak hours and nice weather. The Aguas Livres Aqueduct is visible from the pool deck and the glass wall of the hotel elevator, which is a treat for guests. There's an on-site bar serving light fare and a restaurant offering Portuguese-Mediterranean and international cuisines, including a breakfast buffet with hot and cold options (not included in room rates). Room service is also available. There are two public computers, printer/fax access, and nine meeting rooms, the largest of which is capable of hosting up to 150 people in 2,002 square feet (186 square meters). Laundry services are available at the 24-hour front desk, as are luggage storage and limo/car services. In-room massages can also be arranged despite there being no on-site spa. A paid underground carpark and parking spots on the street in front of the hotel may be used by guests. Pets and early check-in are allowed for an additional fee. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel.
