Lutecia Smart Design Hotel

Scene

Upscale property with eight creatively designed floors

The upscale Hotel Lutecia and the next-door Teatro Maria Matos opened in 1969, and have since hosted Portuguese celebrities such as Herman Jose, Raul Solnado, and Nicolau Breyner. The property was renovated in 2014. Floor-to-ceiling windows wrap around the sleek and modern lobby. A dimly lit TV lounge in the lobby offers leather comfy seating and a flat-screen TV. The top eight floors of the 11-floor property are uniquely designed with fun themes. For example, the fifth floor (the Sunflower Floor) features sunburst designs on yellow walls. The 10th floor is decorated in psychedelic carpeting and has gold and black decor and dangling disco balls casting lights by the elevators. New York takes over the 11th floor and iconic Big Apple photos hang on the walls of the hallways.

Location

On the outskirts of Lisbon, in the New Avenues area and close to the airport

The hotel is on the outskirts of Lisbon’s city center, in a residential area with a few eateries, grocery stores, and the Acqua Roma mall nearby. The Maria Matos Teatro, which has regular theatrical performances, is right next door. There’s nothing much in the immediate are, but the Campo Pequeno bullring is 20 minutes away on foot and the Lisbon Zoo is a 15-minute train ride. It’s a five-minute walk to the Roma subway station and taxis also wait directly outside. There's a railway beside the hotel, with trains that travel to the Lisbon Oceanarium in 30 minutes. Alfama is 10 minutes away by bus, while the Santa Justa Lift in Baixa takes 15 minutes. Belem Tower and Jeronimos Monastery are a 30-minute bus ride. Tram 28 -- which goes to the hilltop Castelo de Sao Jorge -- is a 20-minute bus ride away. It’s a five-minute drive or cab ride to the Lisbon Portela Airport.
