Bottom Line

Hotel do Chiado is an upscale 39-room hotel on the historic cobblestoned streets of Baixa, with a restaurant and bar terrace overlooking the Tagus River and Castelo de Sao Jorge. While convenient, its central location is busy, and some of the rooms get street noise. Rooms have safes, minibars, and flat-screen TVs, but there aren’t any coffeemakers. All feature attractive, streamlined decor and some have terraces. Limited parking is available on-site and there's a small meeting room that can seat up to eight people. Visitors may want to compare rates at the Altis Belem Hotel and Spa, which has more amenities.

Scene

Small, historic property has lovely city views from a dining terrace.

The Hotel do Chiado’s simple Pombaline architecture blends into the historic district, complete with its charming cobblestone streets. The hotel is housed in the Armazens do Chiado building, which dates back to 1894 but was largely destroyed by a fire. With the help of architect Siza Vieira, the building was restored in 1988. A glass door with an Art Deco marquee leads to the quaint lobby, where there’s a chandelier hanging above a small contemporary lounge area. Two narrow elevators are beside a Santa Justa Elevator mural. The hallways have cultural illustrations and photos on the walls and there are a few comfy chairs for lounging. The hotel’s location on a hill and a rooftop dining terrace provide beautiful views of Lisbon, including the Sao Jorge Castle and the Tagus River.

Location

Located in Baxia, between the Bairro Alto and Pombaline Centre

Tucked in a central location in Lisbon’s historic district, the hotel is in an area with plenty of sights, fashionable shops, and tons of dining options, offering everything from sushi to fast food. The hilly location attracts both tourists and locals. Shopping at the Armazens do Chiado is beside the hotel. Directly underground is the Baixa/Chiado metro station and taxis are available outside. Tourist and historic sights -- including Avenida da Liberdade, the Santa Justa Elevator, Castle de Sao Jorge, and Igreja de Sao Roque -- are in walking distance. It’s also a 10-minute walk to the Bairro Alto, known for its nightlife. The riverside plaza, Praca Do Comercio, is a five-minute walk away. Other attractions can be reached by car, including the Jeronimos Monastery and Belem Tower which are 15 minutes away. It’s a 20-minute drive to the Lisbon Portela Airport.

Rooms

Simple, elegant rooms with minibars and flat-screen TVs; some with balconies with Lisbon views

Rooms are elegant in an understated way, with a mix of neutral and striped fabrics with Art Deco-style lamps. Free bottled water and treats on arrival are a sweet touch. All rooms have air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, minibars, safes, and irons/ironing boards. While the best rooms offer panoramic views, some rooms don’t have any views at all. Classic Single and Double Twin Rooms -- the smallest option -- have small windows facing the streets. Three Superior Single and Double rooms overlook the Tagus River and the Espirito Santo staircase, some from French-style balconies. Premium Single and Double/Twin rooms offer garden terraces with excellent views. Suite Castelo -- the hotel’s junior suite -- has a separate small sitting area, a balcony and canopy bed. The one-bedroom Garrett Suite features a balcony overlooking Chiado. Rooms have tiled bathrooms with shower/tub combos -- some of which are in need of a refurbishment. Bathrooms come with bidets, scales, hairdryers, bathrobes, and slippers.

Features

Bar with panoramic city views, on-site parking, a meeting room, concierge service, and free Wi-Fi

The stylish Bar Entretanto has black-and-white decor and arched windows that face the dining terrace, where there are panoramic views of the Sao Jorge Castle and the Tagus River. The interiors of the restaurant are bright thanks to a skylight and large windows. The bar can accommodate private parties of up to 100 people. There's also a small suite with a boardroom table that has been converted into a meeting room that can seat up to eight people.Limited parking spaces are available on-site on a first-come, first-serve basis and there are public garages in the vicinity. The hotel also has a 24-hour concierge service to arrange airport transfers and in-room spa treatments. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel.
