Busy roadside location and music in hotel can create noise
Bathrooms feel cramped and design may lack privacy
The 109-room HF Fenix Music is a good mid-range option that draws a hip, young crowd due to its conceptual music theme. A beautiful rooftop pool and panoramic city views are a big draw, and modern rooms have air-conditioning and high-tech sound systems, but en-suite bathrooms aren't the most private. The hotel is located near the Marques de Pombal Metro stop, putting Lisbon’s major attractions within easy reach. However, both the lively atmosphere and busy surroundings can make for a noisy experience. Although families are welcome at the Fenix Music, the HF Fenix Garden next door could be a quieter and less expensive option. Guests might also compare rates with the nearby Hotel Expo Astoria, which has slightly larger and more minimalist rooms plus a fitness center, but no pool.
Scene
Cool and trendy music theme, and rooftop pool party scene, draw a young crowd
The HF Fenix Music is the newest of three HF Fenix hotels that sit next to one another on a busy roadway near the Marques de Pombal square and roundabout in central Lisbon. What differentiates the Fenix Music from its sister hotels -- and from other similarly-priced options in the area -- is its ubiquitous music theme. From the lobby bar that looks like a keyboard, to the floor-to-ceiling murals of artists and concerts throughout the common areas and rooms, to the business center that resembles a recording studio, the experience is immersive. The hotel's interiors have clean, modern furnishings and a fresh feel throughout (not surprising, as it was built in 2015). There's ample lounging space on mod sofas next to a huge picture window in the lobby, and the breakfast restaurant is cheerful and looks out on a grassy garden area that doubles as a performance stage. While the hotel welcomes families, the overall vibe is more suited to the singles and young couples who come to enjoy the high-decibel music near the pool and don’t mind the hotel’s noisy locale.
Location
At the busy (and noisy) heart of the city, an ideal spot for exploring Lisbon
The HF Fenix is located in central Lisbon, on a major roadway near the Marques de Pombal roundabout. Although the immediate surroundings aren’t quaint, Eduardo VII Park offers some respite from the action and is just a five-minute walk from the hotel. There are also plenty of bars and restaurants within a five- to 10-minute walk, though most visitors will be heading elsewhere in the city to check out the historic sights and charming streets. The Marques de Pombal Metro station is a two-minute walk from the hotel, putting the nightlife of Bairro Alto or the upscale shopping in Chiado within a 20-minute journey. Belem Tower and Sao Jorge Castle are more like 30 to 40 minutes away by metro, but with car rentals available at the hotel those sights are accessible by car in 15 minutes. Rossio Station is five minutes away by taxi, or 15 by metro, while Lisbon Portela Airport will take 15 minutes to reach by car, or 40 by metro.
Rooms
Funky rooms with good city views and groovy music, but a less-than-ideal bathroom setup
Each floor of the hotel takes inspiration from a genre of music like rock or pop, with names of bands like The Rolling Stones and Pink Floyd displayed in the hallways. Corresponding artwork is installed on the walls of rooms in the form of photos, sketches, or paintings of these artists. Aside from the thematic elements, decor is simple - sleek, black and shiny. Rooms are relatively spacious for central Lisbon, with entry-level rooms that have twin beds starting at 24 square meters (250 square feet) and king rooms on upper floors topping out at 29 square meters (325 square feet). Each room is outfitted with a desk, a safe, air-conditioning, minibar, 46-inch LCD TV, free Wi-Fi, and a high-tech audio system plus funky multicolored lighting. Bathrooms have showers, but no tubs, and a quirky design detail results in a privacy issue that may turn some travelers off -- if the door is closed to the shower, the toilet is exposed, and vice versa. Rear-facing rooms are less exposed to outdoor traffic noise while streetside rooms have better views, and some feature private terraces.
Features
Rooftop pool and excellent breakfast in addition to car rentals, babysitting, and free Wi-Fi
The HF Fenix Music offers more in terms of amenities than is typical for a mid-range hotel in Lisbon, and its trendy music concept is a perk for those looking for something innovative and trendy. The standout feature at the hotel is the rooftop pool, with its all-encompassing views of the city, party atmosphere with a bar that stays open until evening, and plenty of lounge chairs for relaxing or socializing. Keep in mind that music is always happening and always loud around the pool, which won't be to everyone's liking. There's also live music in the lobby and at the hotel's outdoor stage. The hotel’s breakfast is notable as well, as it offers better quality and a more substantial menu than typical continental spreads at comparably priced hotels. Lunch and dinner aren't served at the hotel. Other significant features include car rentals at the hotel and an airport shuttle service (for a fee). The HF Fenix music also has a small business center, laundry service, lobby bar, babysitting service on request, free Wi-Fi throughout the property.
