Bottom Line

Poseidon offers basic, clean rooms that are a five-minute walk from the beach and a half-hour walk from the town of Terracina. Rooms are quaint but no-frills, and the hotel’s grounds are pleasant -- a set of two-story buildings laid out around a small, attractive pool and surrounded by views of Mount Circeo. The hotel only serves lunch, so guests should expect to spend their other meals at one of the (mostly seafood) restaurants lining the waterfront. After-hour transportation options are limited, and some guests have commented that taxis don’t circulate late at night. Poseidon is located in a residential area, which is also reputed to be slightly shady after dark.

Scene

Simple, unassuming decor and proximity to the beach

Attractive grounds and a pleasant pool are the highlights at this modest hotel situated in a residential neighborhood near the beach. The modern building was inspired by the design of a ship -- appropriate for this seaside location -- and the terrace overlooking the pool looks like the bow of a boat. It even has a glass floor, giving guests the feeling of floating on water. The unadorned lobby and common areas are finished in light wood and earth-tone tiles. The aesthetic throughout the property is of simple, new suburban construction.

Location

About a half-hour walk to Terracina’s old town quarters, and five minutes' walk to the beach

Terracina is located halfway between Rome and Naples in the province of Latium, known for its beach towns. The hotel itself is a short walk from the beach, a long, attractive stretch of sand lined with a few (mostly seafood) restaurants, bars, and shops. Visitors have noted that the town of Terracina has an older section and a newer section and that Poseidon is found in the latter, which has some unsavory areas. The old town of Terracina is about a 30-minute walk from the hotel. Public transportation within the city is somewhat limited, and guests have noted that taxis are few and far between and don’t run frequently in the evenings. The town of Terracina is accessible via bus from Laurentina; there are also trains that run between Terracina and Rome.

Rooms

Basic country decor and balconies

Floral textiles and ruffled drapery decorate these quaint, no-frills rooms; the blue and white color scheme adds some nautical flair. Rooms have air conditioners, which are reputed not to always work. All rooms have balconies or terraces which overlook the quiet gardens or the pool. The bathrooms feature stall showers and white tile with the occasional window. Room cleanliness gets overall high marks.

Features

A small pool with countryside views and an adjacent outdoor breakfast nook

Poseidon has a small parking lot which must be reserved in advance because of a limited number of spaces. (Parking on the surrounding narrow streets is available but can be difficult to find.) The hotel offers sandwiches and snacks at lunchtime, but doesn’t have an evening dining option. The small, attractive pool and handsome wooden deck are surrounded by a good number of lounge chairs and umbrellas, along with well-manicured gardens.
