Bottom Line

Set on a quiet street a few minutes from the Vatican, Hotel Della Conciliazione is a three-and-a-half-pearl hotel in one of Rome’s oldest neighborhoods. The area near St. Peter’s Square is clean and quiet, which is welcome at times but means that most of Rome’s other monuments and nightlife options are on the other side of town (or at least literally on the other side of the river). The hotel was completely renovated in 2015, and the 67 updated rooms have modern touches including espresso machines and USB outlets. There's little in the way of features other than breakfast for a small fee and free Wi-Fi. Guests hoping for a scenic view should consider the nearby Relais Vatican Views, which has an outdoor terrace that Hotel Della Conciliazione unfortunately lacks.

Scene

A contemporary hotel with classic Italian style

Hotel Della Conciliazione is an updated hotel in the quiet Borgo Pio neighborhood of Rome. The spacious gray marble lobby has elegant seating in the form of pink velvet chairs, and a small bar with Lucite stools for relaxing in between trips to museums and the historic sites on the other side of the Tiber River. There's also a small sheltered courtyard with greenery and tables and chairs that's popular with smokers. Given the hotel's location between the Vatican and Italy’s Supreme Court, the hotel tends to attract a mix of leisure and business clients. However, many leave the neighborhood at night in order to experience livelier areas of the city. The overall vibe is refined and quiet.

Location

A minute from St. Peter's Square, but across the river from the center of Rome

The street outside Hotel della Conciliazione is pedestrianized for most of the daytime hours, when cafe tables and umbrellas are set outside of the many coffee bars and restaurants that dot the area. Located a short walk from St. Peter’s Square, the hotel is ideal for exploring Vatican City and popping in for the Pope’s public blessing every Wednesday outside the basilica. However, the Borgo Pio neighborhood is bit farther afield from the center of Rome and the rest of the city’s monuments. The Ottaviano metro is about a 10-minute walk away, and multiple bus stops are available at Piazza Risorgimento five minutes from the hotel. Rome Fiumicino Airport can be reached in about 40 minutes by car or taxi.

Rooms

Refined rooms with flat-screen TVs and espresso machines

The rooms at Hotel della Conciliazione are done in a mix of muted grays and bright ikat prints that come together for a refined Italian style. All 67 rooms were remodeled in 2015 and feel uncluttered, with simple furniture and large flat-screen TVs. Superior Rooms are more spacious and come with simple terraces overlooking an internal courtyard. One suite (room 501) has a view of the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica. All rooms have a flat-screen TV, free Wi-Fi, mini-bar, safe, and an espresso machine with two capsules of coffee per day (with additional capsules available to purchase from the front desk). The modest marble bathrooms have hairdryers and toiletries. Some rooms have jetted tubs while others have step-in showers.

Features

Reasonably priced breakfast and small bar

Features are limited here. The hotel has a spacious lobby which includes a small, but reasonably priced bar, as well as two computers for browsing or printing boarding passes and museum tickets. There's also a long breakfast room which hosts a sweet and savory buffet every morning with made-to-order coffee (which is a bonus considering many Roman hotels make due with a self-serve coffee vending machine). Wi-Fi is free throughout. While the free features end there, the hotel has a policy of allowing room upgrades and/or late checkouts for a relatively low surcharge (availability permitting).
