Bottom Line

The 137-room Hampton Inn Las Vegas - Summerlin is a bland suburban chain hotel just off the freeway in an industrial area north and west of Las Vegas' main strip. While the lobby is simple and charming, rooms look dated and bland, and some guests complain of cursory cleaning. With smoking rooms on the first floor, the musty scent of smoke can sometimes be detected throughout the hotel. The value hotel does offer an impressive free breakfast and free Wi-Fi, and has a small outdoor pool and hot tub.

Scene

A simple, modern lobby, more charming than expected for a roadside chain hotel

Uninteresting and typical of a value roadside chain hotel from the outside, the Hampton Inn Las Vegas - Summerlin has a surprisingly simple, modern and sleek lobby. Coffee and tea, free all day, are available next to the hotel's entrance, on the way to way to dark wood reception counter. With just two chairs sitting across from it, the reception offers little communal space, but there's a sizable seating area adjacent to the front door. With several dark wood tables and a high-top counter, the space is designed for eating (the breakfast room is attached) and working, rather than lounging, but it at least offers a space to go beyond the guest rooms. Small cacti, modern vases, and a few black and white photographs of the Las Vegas area spice up the simple room. The concrete pool deck is basic, topped with retro-style white loungers. Thanks to its location, the hotel is primarily popular with business travelers and road-trippers just passing through.

Location

Next to the highway, in a suburb of Las Vegas, about 20 minutes from the strip

The Hampton Inn Las Vegas - Summerlin is located in an industrial strip near I-95, in the Las Vegas suburb of Summerlin, surrounded by a cluster of other comparable hotels, restaurants, and medical parks. There are a handful of moderately priced restaurants in the area, and both a Target and a Whole Foods are within a few minutes' drive. About a 20-minute drive to downtown Las Vegas, the hotel is less appealing for tourists, although it does offer a cheap and quiet option for those who find the 24/7 party of the strip unappealing. The hotel is about a 25-minute drive from McCarran International Airport.

Rooms

Standard roadside hotel fare, if a bit dark and dated in style

Unlike the simple and modern lobby, the rooms at the Hampton Inn Las Vegas - Summerlin look dark and dated. Equipped with either two double beds or a king-size bed and a small couch, the rooms are decorated with the bland style typical of roadside chain hotels, with plain wood furnishing and bare walls, save for one or two generic hanging prints. Some guests complain about shoddy housekeeping, and the carpets are worn. With smoking rooms on the first floor, the scent of cigarettes can become a problem, even in non-smoking rooms. Overall, the furniture feels cheap and chain-like, and the couches in King Rooms look right out of the early '90s. Bathrooms are fairly large and plain, with full tubs and Neutrogena toiletries. All rooms have a flat-screen TV, microwave, and mini-fridge. The rooms have air-conditioning; if you open a window, the noise from the freeway will become far more apparent.

Features

Outdoor pool, free breakfast, free Wi-Fi, and a gym

Like most of the hotels in this brand, the Hampton Inn Las Vegas - Summerlin has basic amenities. There is an impressively extensive free breakfast buffet, which includes cereal, fruit, oatmeal, pastries, bagels, eggs, waffles, and more. During the week, the hotel also offers "Breakfast on the Run" to-go bags. The fitness center is small, and includes standard equipment, but the hotel also provides free passes to a nearby Gold's Gym for those guests looking for a more comprehensive workout. The hotel has one (roughly 25-person) meeting room that is dated and none too welcoming, but the hotel's small business center has two printers. There is free Wi-Fi, although it can be unreliable. Finally, the hotel has an unheated outdoor pool and a small hot tub set on a small, cement patio.
