The 368-room Sands Beach Resort is a mid-range beachfront property popular with families and older couples seeking value. Spacious apartment-style rooms can be hit or miss, as some have been renovated and feature simple but contemporary decor and updated kitchens, while others feel like they haven’t been touched in years, with dated elements including tube TVs. Aside from the on-site beach, the property offers dozens of daily activities for all ages -- including seven pools, a restaurant, a tennis court, a game room, and nightly entertainment -- but it’s mostly quiet thanks to its sprawling grounds. Those looking to stay all-inclusive may want to consider the Be Live Experience Grand Teguise Playa, also directly on the beach.
Scene
Sprawling mid-range beachfront resort with seven pools and a quiet atmosphere
The three-pearl Sands Beach Resort occupies a sprawling area overlooking a beach just outside Costa Teguise. Rooms and common spaces are housed in dozens of one- and two-story white structures built around six freeform pools, each with a kids' section. The lobby, a large white building with high wooden ceilings and white tile floors, takes up the entire front of the hotel, sheltering rooms closest to the road from any traffic noise. Decor in the lobby is a mix of dated and homey, with old-fashioned couches featuring 1980s-style upholstery along with more elegant ones in dark hues. Outside, cacti and palm trees planted in black volcanic sand and pebbles line terra-cotta paths with white walls, lending the property a lovely local feel. Despite its room count and the many families with kids that vacation here, the atmosphere is quiet and relaxing due to the massive, sprawling grounds. The prettiest section of the property is the area closest to the beach, which has a number of rooms overlooking the ocean, and a pool bar set on its own island surrounded by a tranquil lagoon with sandy shores.
Location
On a sandy beach a short walk from central Costa Teguise
This resort is located in a quiet beachfront area a little outside of the city center. There isn’t much in the immediate vicinity aside from a mall with restaurants and shops that can be found a 10-minute walk away. Central Costa Teguise, home to numerous restaurants, bars, and shops of all kids, is a 15-minute walk away. It’s an eight-minute drive to Costa Teguise Golf Club. Most guests choose to stay on-site at the beach beach or by the resort’s many pools, but there are a few other nice stretches of sand a short drive from the property. The airport is a 15-minute drive away.
Rooms
Spacious apartment-style rooms with balconies, but some are dated and tired
The hotel has 368 self-catering studios and apartments, all featuring fully equipped kitchens with ovens, cooktops, toasters, electric kettles, and fridges; balconies have basic plastic furniture. The property is constantly updating rooms, but many still have a decor style that feels straight out of the '80s, with thin bedspreads, red and orange couch upholstery, and basic pine wood furniture. Renovated units, however, are fresher and more comfortable, with pretty wooden furniture, a subdued earth tone palette, and more modern kitchens with dishwashers. In-room amenities include ceiling fans, toiletries, and TVs, although some are still old tube TVs. Some rooms feature bathrooms with walk-in showers while others have shower/tub combos. Safes and Wi-Fi are available for a pesky daily or weekly fee. Beachfront units are located closest to the beach and the Mai Tai pool bar, and have pleasant ocean and lagoon views.
Features
Sports facilities, seven pools, kids’ club, restaurant, spa, and supermarket
During the winter months the property serves as training grounds for triathlon athletes and features wonderful sports facilities, including a heated semi-Olympic pool, a cycling shop with group tours and rentals, and dozens of free daily activities with a focus on sports. Additionally, there is a fitness center with cardio and strength-training equipment, personal trainers, and two tennis courts on-site. Non-motorized sports are available at the beach, including kayaks, paddleboards, and windsurfing. The hotel is also home to seven pools, including two heated ones, and seven kids' pools. The kids’ club offers plenty of daily activities for kids, including arts and crafts, sports, and group classes; there is also an outdoor playground and a game room with pool tables. Although all rooms here have kitchens (and many guests take advantage of the on-site supermarket), the property also has a restaurant for guests on half-board meal plans. The pool bar has a short food menu as well. There is also a bar with nightly entertainment and a spa with an array of treatments. Free Wi-Fi is only available in the bars. There is an Internet corner on-site.
