The 131-room Oasis Lanz Beach Mate is a casual, lower-middle-range apartment property with an excellent location in the heart of the action in Costa Teguise. There are dozens of bars, restaurants, and shops within a few blocks, and all of the area’s top beaches can be found within a five-minute walk. Apartments at this family-friendly hotel are spacious but hit or miss: renovated units are contemporary and feature air-conditioning, while non-renovated ones have worn furniture and dated decor. All, however, have kitchenettes, sofa beds, and balconies. Two of the four pools are heated year-round, and the restaurant serves a decent breakfast buffet, as well as Mediterranean food for dinner, and snacks and drinks during the day. **Note that renovations are ongoing until late 2019. **In this price range, Santa Rosa offers better value overall, but it's farther from the beach.
Scene
Quiet apartment property with Moroccan-inspired common areas and pleasant grounds
First opened in 1990, the Oasis Lanz Beach Mate is in the midst of transitioning from a tired property in urgent need of renovations to a more stylish, up-to-date affair. Renovations are being carried out in several stages through late 2019, and until everything is finalized, the property is a mixed bag, as some apartments and common areas already have a fresh feel, and others are stuck in the '90s. The lobby and the restaurant are the two most appealing indoor spaces, with Moroccan-inspired decor that combines latticework, striped upholstery, metal lanterns, and tent-style fabric ceilings. The rest of the interiors are plainer and have a somewhat dated mix of generic white furniture, brown floor tiles, and older cafeteria chairs. The outdoors are pleasant and offer ample space to unwind, featuring two spacious decks, charming Canarian gardens with volcanic sand and cacti, and lots of palm trees. Although about 80 percent of guests are families, we found the atmosphere quiet and relaxing, especially around the largest pool. The smaller pool offers access to the snack bar (which doubles as the restaurant for breakfast and dinner) and has a slightly livelier vibe and about the same amount of loungers as the main pool. Still, there is no entertainment program here, so those hoping for some quiet days by the pool don’t have to worry about being disturbed by eager animators or loud music. There is also no kids’ club, so travelers seeking something with more family-friendly amenities may want to compare rates at the H10 Suites Lanzarote Gardens, which features comfortable apartments, a lovely kiddy pool with a pirate ship and slides, and an excellent kids’ club. The Be Live Experience Lanzarote Beach is a great alternative for those wanting something livelier and more contemporary, while Oceano Apartments is another decent option in the same price range as the Oasis Lanz Beach Mate.
Location
Within easy walking distance of the beach and many restaurants and bars
Oasis Lanz Beach Club is centrally located in Costa Teguise, a small beach community a little north of the airport. The hotel is right in the center of town, surrounded by bars, restaurants, and shops. Las Cucharas, a sandy beach known for its clear water, is less than a five-minute walk away, as are several other attractive stretches of sand, including Jablillo and Bastian. Arrecife, home to a handful of historic and cultural attractions, is a 15-minute drive away, as is the airport. The stunning volcanos of the Timanfaya National Park are about 35 minutes from the hotel by car.
Rooms
Spacious apartments, many in need of urgent updates, and all with balconies and kitchenettes
The hotel has 131 one- and two-bedroom apartments spread over several two- and three-story blocks set around the pools. All apartments are spacious, clean, and light, with big glass doors opening onto furnished balconies, however, decor style and amenities are inconsistent, as the property is currently undergoing extensive renovations. Non-renovated units have only received a few cosmetic updates since the hotel opened in 1990 and are in need of urgent renovations, featuring worn, basic furniture, thin bedspreads in faded colors, plain floor tiles, and old tube TVs. Renovated units are divided into two different categories: Superior Apartments were updated in the early 2000s and have generic but more contemporary decor in a black-and-white color scheme, while Vanity units are stylish and modern, with wooden floors, big bathrooms with walk-in rain showers, cheerful pops of yellow and teal, and cleaner lines throughout. All but Vanity Rooms have kitchenettes equipped with mini-fridges, toasters, ovens, microwaves, electric kettles, and cooktops. Higher-category units also have dishwashers. Each apartment is outfitted with a TV (older in non-renovated units and flat-screen in Superior and Vanity Apartments), ceiling fans, and a sofa bed. Only Vanity units have air-conditioning. In-room Wi-Fi is available for a fee in all apartments (it’s free in the lobby), as are safes.
Features
Four pools, buffet restaurant and snack bar, sports facilities, and free parking
There are four outdoor pools at the Oasis Lanz Beach Mate, including two large family pools and two smaller ones for kids. One family pool and one kiddy pool are heated, which is a great perk for the colder months, but there aren’t enough loungers for all guests during peak season and most get reserved with towels before breakfast. The restaurant serves buffet-style breakfast and dinner in a big dining room by one of the pools, and though food gets mixed reviews, most guests seem to find it reasonable for the price. There is no designated pool bar, but the restaurant doubles as a snack bar during the day, offering a few small bites and a good drink menu. The gym is small but light and equipped with enough machines for a quick workout, and there are two worn tennis courts in the back of the property. Outdoor parking is available free of charge. Free Wi-Fi is limited to the lobby.
