Stooping palm trees, colorful flowers, cacti, and dark local volcanic stones dot the beautiful grounds at Hipotels La Geria, an upper-middle-range beachfront resort popular with German and British guests. The property is housed in a white V-shaped building directly on Avenida de las Playas -- Puerto del Carmen’s promenade -- and many of its rooms offer at least partial views. Although part of a medium-sized chain of more than 25 properties in Spain, La Geria doesn’t have a strong corporate vibe and the atmosphere here is relaxed and friendly. With salmon and pale pink walls, beige floors, white couches, and a huge skylight, the lobby feels fresh and appealing. A black double staircase flanked by plants leads from the main reception to the dining area, which offers access to the restaurant and bar.

The area is mostly residential, with just a handful of large beachfront resorts and several gated communities. The airport is just 10 minutes from the hotel, and famous Timanfaya National Park -- home to several volcanoes -- can be reached in about 20 minutes.
