Scene

Mid-range, family-friendly seaside resort with lots of open outdoor areas

Quiet, casual, and tucked away, the Ocean Residence Langkawi is a pleasant mid-range getaway. The lobby is located in a homey single-story building and features a couple of plush sofas and a coffee table with magazines fanned out on top, but it doesn't really inspire lingering. Far more inviting are the hotel's sprawling grounds, with lots of lush green space for running around plus three pools, one of which dips off an infinity edge into the vast ocean beyond. The resort caters to vacationing couples and families alike, and gets both Malaysian and international guests.

Location

In a quiet mangrove, a short drive from the town of Kuah

The Ocean Residence Langkawi is located in a quiet mangrove area overlooking the Strait of Malacca, a six-minute drive from the town of Kuah. UnderWater World is a 25-minute drive away, while the Langkawi Cable Car and Langkawi Sky Bridge take around 35 minutes to reach by road. Langkawi International Airport is a 15-minute drive from the hotel.

Rooms

Wide variety of rooms and villas, some with kitchens, others with direct pool access

The Ocean Residence Langkawi offers a huge selection of room types, including suites, villas, and converted shipping containers cleverly turned into rooms. Many of the higher-category rooms have ocean views and come with separate living rooms and kitchens. Rooms in the Longhouse feature direct access from patios to the 60-meter-long lap pool. Decor varies a bit depending on room type; Containers, for example, have corrugated ceilings and exposed brick accents while suites feature wood panelling and recessed lighting on the ceilings. That said, most units feature simple modern but homey furnishings in neutral tones spruced up by solid-colored cushions and patterned throws. Bathrooms vary as well, but many have simple walk-in showers with electric water heaters and wall-mounted toiletry dispensers.

Features

Three pools (one with sea water) and seafood restaurant with free breakfast and barbecue options

Features are a strong suit at The Ocean Residence Langkawi, and they aim to make the most of its coastal location and verdant grounds. Topping the list is the property's three swimming pools, one of which measures 60 meters in length and wraps around the Long House. The lagoon-style Main Pool is ideal for swimming and playing, with an infinity edge overlooking ocean views and a few lounge chairs and tables plus a shallow children's area. There's also a Tidal Pool that fills up with natural sea water.Dining is limited to the Ocean Cafe, an outdoor venue with patio tables and chairs situated under a covered awning on a grassy lawn. A breakfast buffet with Asian hot dishes and continental offerings such as bread and Bircher muesli is included in the room rates. Lunch and dinner offerings include Western pub fare (think burgers and nachos), plus Malay seafood dishes and curries. There's also a bar with fresh juices, beer, and wine. Note that the cafe is only open for lunch during low season, but the hotel can arrange for private barbecue with fresh seafood and steak throughout the year. There's also a spa, the Ocean Wave, which features massages and other wellness treatments. Wi-Fi and parking are available free of charge and airport transfers and laundry services are available for a fee.
