Bottom Line

Surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains' natural beauty, on a
lake that’s been used as the setting for more than one movie, the Lodge on
Lake Lure offers a quiet, romantic mountain retreat. The upscale inn has 17 cozy rooms, most offering unobstructed lake views, often best taken in from private rocking chairs on a shaded terrace. The restaurant serves an extensive free, Southern-inspired breakfast daily, as well as a prix fixe dinner (for a fee) four
nights a week. A veranda overlooking the lake offers outdoor dining
in good weather. The hotel is relatively self-contained, but there’s no pool or fitness center -- though there is a lake, with canoes -- and guests will have to
venture out for dinner on the nights the restaurant is closed.

Scene

Quiet mountain lodge overlooking scenic lake

The Lodge on Lake Lure is an imposing stone and painted-log-cabin-style building with striking red doors. Inside, the lobby is romantic and rustic, with
wood-paneled walls and ceilings, an oversized stone fireplace, and leather and upholstered chairs and couches grouped into sitting areas. There’s also a piano and a well-stocked bookshelf. In the evenings, a free wine and appetizer social is held in the
lobby, and, throughout the day, tea, lemonade, and snacks like homemade cookies
are set out for guests to enjoy. There’s also a small wooden bar where coffee and wine can be ordered. Sweeping views of the lake can be found throughout the
property, including from the restaurant, Tree Tops Dining Room, and several
outdoor spots with lounge chairs and wooden benches. With just 17 rooms, the inn always feels low-key, intimate, and relaxed, although the restaurant does attract locals and visitors not staying at the hotel.

Location

On a scenic lake in the Blue Ridge Mountains, an hour from Asheville

The Lodge on Lake Lure is located on the shores of picturesque Lake Lure, which has been used as the setting for such films as "Last of the Mohicans" and "Dirty Dancing." It's a quiet, wooded area with other lake houses nearby. There are plenty of
outdoor activities around the lake including boating, hiking, and horseback
riding. There are several delis and cafes within a 15-minute drive, and Asheville
is less than an hour’s drive away. There are a handful of other restaurants within close driving distance, convenient for days when the hotel's restaurant is closed. The hotel offers free parking.

Rooms

Cozy, clean rooms with panoramic lake views, some with fireplaces, kitchenettes, and/or furnished balconies

The 17 rooms at the Lodge on Lake Lure are homey and clean, and vary in decor.
Some have wooden floors with tapestry-style rugs, while others are carpeted; some
have light painted walls, while others have wood-paneled walls. Some rooms have carved wooden four-poster beds, while others feel more modern in design. Amenities vary
by room, but most have unobstructed lake views; some have kitchenettes, fireplaces, and/or furnished balconies. All rooms have flat-screen TVs
and free Wi-Fi. The generally spacious bathrooms have Gilchrist & Soames amenities -- some have wood panelling, others are done in marble -- and the huge jetted tubs found in certain rooms are a highlight. A handful of rooms are pet-friendly, and a few have pull-out sofas for families.

Features

Free, extensive breakfast, and restaurant serving prix fixe dinner

Guests like the free Southern breakfast
served daily at the restaurant; the offerings vary each morning. The restaurant also serves a prix fixe dinner
Wednesday through Saturday, and offers dining on the terrace in good weather. Each evening, a free social is held in the lodge, with appetizers and wine. Homemade cookies
are also available at times, and there’s a small bar serving drinks for a fee. The
lodge can be booked out exclusively for private events or meetings. There’s a computer available
for guest use, and both Wi-Fi and parking are free. The inn offers canoes to borrow to use on the lake, its private dock is a popular spot for swimming and sunning, and pontoon boat rides are available. In-room massages can be booked.
