23-minute walk from Lake Como and downtown Como
The upper-middle-range Hotel Como might be a bit far from Lake Como, but a 2016 renovation has made this into a mostly modern hotel with a rooftop pool serviced by a garden bar, as well as a small gym, meeting room, lobby bar, and free bikes to borrow. There’s no full-service restaurant here and the gym equipment is a tad old. The 79 rooms are contemporary with flat-screen TVs, minibars, and air-conditioning. Some have balconies, and all feature dated bathrooms that weren’t included in the renovations. Take note that the hotel is seasonal and is closed November to February. Metropole Suisse Hotel doesn't have a pool, but it’s a good alternative with a restaurant and a location close to the lake.
Scene
Modern hotel with a neutral decor that was renovated in 2016
Hotel Como reopened in March 2016 after a large renovation project that included the guest rooms, lobby, and reception. The property’s makeover turned the hotel into a modern and chic hotel with understated elegance. The lobby’s glossy tan floors pair well with gray toned furniture with yellow accents and a mix of dark wooden and gray wooden walls, shelving, and reception desk. Alternatively, the breakfast room is a bit bland with black chairs, white tablecloth tables, and gold accents like a floral art piece hanging on the wall. The rooftop terrace, however, is charming and elegant with a wood awning and green bushes, shrubs, and potted plants. Guests tend to be couples, though there is a mix of clientele. Take note that the hotel is seasonal and is closed November to February.
Location
Far from the lakefront, and about a 15-minute walk to the city center
Hotel Como doesn’t have the most ideal location in Como, but that’s probably why prices are fairly on the cheap side. The surrounding neighborhood is filled with some restaurants and grocery stores. It’s about a 23-minute walk from the lake itself and a 15-minute walk to the main city center. The Cathedral of Como takes 17 minutes to reach on foot. For those without a car, the closest bus stop is a two-minute walk away and a train stop takes five minutes to reach on foot. It’s a 45-minute drive to Malpensa Airport.
Rooms
Contemporary rooms with flat-screen TVs, minibars, and air-conditioning; bathrooms are dated
Hotel Como’s rooms are starkly modern with sleek lines, neutral tones, and golden accents in pillows, bed runners, and chairs. Light wood floors contrast nicely with dark wooden streamlined furniture. All rooms offer flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning, minibars, safes, and desks. Suites have separate living rooms and kettles, though most rooms lack any coffee- and tea-making facilities. Some rooms have small furnished balconies with views of nearby hotels. The rooms were part of the refurbishment plan that ended in 2016, however, the bathrooms in most of the rooms (besides the Suites) were not updated. They’re clearly dated with white tiles and visible grime, but thankfully, there are plans to renovate them in coming years. The bathrooms all feature showers, hairdryers, and generic toiletries. Smoking rooms are available.
Features
Rooftop pool, rooftop bar, lobby bar, breakfast, gym, meeting room, bike rentals, and parking
Though it lacks a full-service restaurant, Hotel Como has a good selection of amenities like a rooftop pool with panoramic views. It’s connected to a rooftop terrace with patio seating and is serviced with drinks and snacks by the Rooftop Garden Bar. The hotel’s lobby bar also provides drinks and snacks, while a breakfast buffet with hot and cold items is served daily for a fee. Hotel Como’s gym is small with dated equipment, but it does include a flat-screen TV, treadmill, and a few weight machines. For business travelers, there’s a single fully-equipped meeting room that fits up to 75 people. Wi-Fi and bike rentals are free and pets are welcome at no additional charge. There’s free outdoor parking and paid indoor parking, but with limited spaces, it’s best to reserve a spot before arrival.
