Montage Laguna Beach
30801 South Coast Highway

With beautiful grounds, an elegant spa, and modern rooms (all of which have stunning views of the ocean), this hotel is possibly the most serene and relaxing in Orange County, California. It's perched directly above the beach, and the building's "U" shape allows for breathtaking views from the lobby and all pools, restaurants, and guest rooms.

Capri Laguna On The Beach
1441 S Coast Hwy

The two-and-a-half pearl Capri Laguna is a charming boutique hotel that has a spectacular oceanfront setting perched above a quiet beach just a three-minute drive from downtown Laguna Beach. It’s an older property, with no elevators and exterior corridors, but its location and amenities are excellent for the rates. Highlights include free hot breakfast, a nice heated outdoor pool, small fitness center, guest laundry facilities, and free parking and Wi-Fi. Rooms are clean, spacious, and feature mini-fridges, microwaves, coffeemakers, and updated marble bathrooms with large walk-in showers. Many have kitchenettes and panoramic ocean views from private balconies. For something downtown, The Tides Inn typically has lower rates, but it's not on the beach.

Laguna Beach House
475 N Coast Hwy

Laguna Beach House’s location is a big draw for tourists. It's within walking distance to Main Beach, restaurants, and shops. The motel-like exteriors can be misleading, but inside, it's a three-and-a-half pearl boutique hotel exuding sand- and surf-inspired character. Features like the hot tub and fire pit on the pool deck, plus the nightly wine hour, instantly put travelers in vacation mode. The 36 rooms offer a variety of brilliant views, and are kitted out with Keurig coffeemakers, ample closet space, and minibars. Pets are welcome here. Guests should note the per-day charges for parking, plus mandatory nightly fees to cover amenities like unlimited Wi-Fi, morning coffee/tea, and beach equipment. For an equally stellar location with similar features at lower rates, The Tides Inn is practically next door.

The Tides Laguna Beach
460 N Coast Hwy

The 21-room Tides Inn is a quaint, eclectically designed value property with a charming beach-style vibe and greenery throughout. It's conveniently located within an eight-minute walk of the beach, shops, and restaurants. Built in 1949 as a classic motor inn, the first-floor car ports have been converted into guest rooms, and no two rooms are alike. All have air-conditioning, Keurig coffeemakers, mini-fridges, flat-screen TVs, local artwork, and original-tile bathrooms. Some rooms have kitchenettes, plus balconies or patios with seating and ocean views. The hotel is centered around a lovely saltwater pool complete with fountains and pool toys, a fireplace and a pit. A pet-friendly property, the Tides Inn provides free Wi-Fi and parking. Be aware that some rooms get traffic noise, and some bathrooms can be small.

La Casa del Camino
1289 S Coast Hwy

The mid-range La Casa del Camino has been a Laguna Beach landmark since it first opened its doors in 1929, and its rooftop bar is so popular it can be tough to find a spot at times. The lively lobby bar features live music, and the bistro serves Mediterranean-inspired small plates. The 37 rooms are small but offer fascinating rage of decor from traditional, Spanish-style to funky and ultra-modern, a result of the hotel's partnering with various designers and surf-board companies. A daily resort covers parking, Wi-Fi, and admittance to a local gym. Travelers could also check out the Pacific Edge on Laguna Beach, another beachfront property with somewhat lower rates.

The Inn At Laguna Beach
211 North Coast Highway

Perched on a bluff, this three-pearl boutique hotel delivers dramatic views as well as easy on-foot access to Main Beach and numerous urban amenities. Its 70 rooms -- all tastefully decorated in a breezy coastal style -- are well equipped with modern conveniences: coffeemakers, minibars, flat-screen TVs, and iHome docks among them. Most provide at least a glimpse of the water, too, and some boast oceanside balconies. Views can also be savored from the stunning terrace/bar. There aren't any other significant on-site facilities save for an outdoor pool and meeting rooms. But assorted freebies -- including an evening wine reception -- add to the property's value. If you’re looking for a mid-range alternative with more features (and a livelier atmosphere), try Pacific Edge or La Casa del Camino instead.

Laguna Beach Lodge
30806 Coast Hwy

At this 43-room budget spot, guests are a short walk from Treasure Island Beach and a 10-minute drive from downtown Laguna Beach without having to pay the typical astronomical prices of resorts in the area. However, the property itself is old and far from fancy. Rooms are spacious and come with mini-fridges, microwaves, and some lovely ocean views, but their tired decor and small bathrooms could use updates. The heated outdoor pool and a small, peaceful courtyard provide a laid-back vibe. Aside from a free, mediocre continental breakfast and free parking and Wi-Fi, amenities are scarce. The Tides Inn near Main Beach is also affordable, but its rooms have more character.

Laguna Riviera Beach Resort
825 S Coast Hwy

The Laguna Riviera is a low-key, family-run resort right on the beach, which gets a good deal of repeat visitors. Many of the rooms look out over the ocean, and some have full kitchens. There's a pool, a game room, and a lending library on-site and a number of shops and cafes within a short walk from the hotel. The lack of on-site restaurant is a drawback, although a free continental breakfast is served daily.

Pacific Edge Hotel on Laguna Beach
647 South Coast Highway

This 129-room surfer-themed hotel is mere steps from the crashing waves and soft white sands of the Pacific Ocean, and a short walk to the palm-tree lined streets, restaurants, bars, boutique shops, and art galleries of Laguna Beach. It's a bit pricey for what you get -- there can be a shortage of beach chairs and some rooms can get noisy -- but there are nice common areas, as well as a restaurant overlooking the beach and a small pool with a whirlpool. For a similar hotel with a lower price point, try the Inn at Laguna Beach.

Casa Laguna Hotel & Spa
2510 S Coast Hwy

The upper-middle-range Casa Laguna Inn & Spa is a historic boutique inn that’s loaded with charm. The adults-only property is a few minutes from downtown Laguna Beach and public beaches. Its 22 individually decorated rooms are clean; many offer ocean views, but standard rooms can be on the small side. Geared toward couples, it has lushly landscaped grounds featuring a heated pool and small spa with indoor and outdoor treatment areas. A cooked-to-order breakfast is served daily for a fee, and a free wine and cheese reception happens nightly. But expect to pay a daily service fee to cover parking and Wi-Fi. As an alternative, the mid-range Pacific Edge on Laguna Beach, a Joie de Vivre Hotel, is right on the beach and can offer lower rates.
