The 365-room Ritz-Carlton, Kuala Lumpur is a luxurious tower with a style that exudes the Asian city's British Colonial history. Its large contemporary rooms each come with a personal butler, and the upscale dining options merge traditional Cantonese cuisine with afternoon tea. There's an outdoor pool with views of the city, while the posh spa has a landscaped outdoor garden with waterfalls and a plunge pool. Located within Bukit Bintang's Golden Triangle, it's within easy walking distance of major shopping centers. Travelers might also want to consider the nearby JW Marriott Hotel Kuala Lumpur, which offers a five-pearl experience at slightly cheaper rates.
Scene
Luxury hotel with European elegance and tropical flair
The Ritz-Carlton is an elegant sanctuary in a bustling district of Kuala Lumpur, with a surprisingly small lobby that seems to have been designed as an antidote to the neighborhood's massive shopping complexes. Wall-to-wall wood paneling and a low ceiling with deep-set molding make for a cozy welcome, while pink and green marble and glittering crystal chandeliers lend a final layer of high polish. A European influence can be seen throughout in the navy patterned carpets and still-life paintings. But this is punctuated by the occasional tropical flora or Malaysian decorative flourish. (Note the doorman in traditional garb.) Guests tend to be vacationing couples, though families and business travelers make their way here, too.
Location
In the Golden Triangle near major shopping
Located in the Bukit Bintang's bustling Golden Triangle shopping and business district, the Ritz-Carlton, Kuala Lumpur is conveniently near major shopping outlets as well as restaurants and nightlife. The Pavilion Mall and the Starhill Gallery shopping center are both within a five-minute walk. Lot 10, Sungei Wang Plaza, and Berjaya Times Square, a shopping center with a theme park, are also within a 10-minute walk. It’s a five-minute drive to the Petronas Twin Towers, and just over a 45-minute drive to the airport.
Rooms
Large contemporary rooms with butler service
The hotel's 365 rooms and suites are decorated in a warm, contemporary style that diverges from the design of the rest of the hotel, while still incorporating a few of the luxurious details, brass accents, and richly-colored Oriental rugs. The largely neutral palate has dark wood furnishings and walls with contrasting white trim. Standard Rooms are 430-square-feet and have sitting areas as well as either city or pool views. Marble bathrooms have walk-in showers and separate soaking tubs. All rooms have flat-screen TVs, minibars, and personal butler service, while Executive Rooms add work desks. There are also sprawling two- and three-bedroom residential suites with full kitchens, ideal for families or long stays.
Features
Full-service spa with outdoor water garden, outdoor pool, fitness center, and multiple casual and fine-dining options
True to its upscale reputation, the hotel's Spa Village provides the usual range of massages and treatments, but with the addition of a serene outdoor garden surrounded by waterfalls and a landscaped terrace that has its own plunge pool and hot tub. There's also a sauna and steam room, along with an attached fitness center stocked with treadmills, steppers, stationary bikes, ellipticals, and weight-training machines. A separate, larger outdoor pool adds more leisure space with a covered seating area and a small sundeck with a few loungers. The hotel's signature restaurant is Li Yen, a white-tablecloth experience with Cantonese cuisine accompanied by regular performances of traditional Yangqing music. César's dishes out international fare from an open show kitchen in a trendy dining room, and Carlton Gourmet is the hotel's casual eatery (and breakfast restaurant, served for a fee). The Lobby Lounge's pleasant Old World atmosphere with wood-paneled walls and leather couches makes for an appropriate afternoon tea and Sunday roast venue. The hotel has extensive meeting facilities and event space, with 25 meeting rooms, plus there's a comprehensive business center. Basic Wi-Fi is free throughout, but high-speed Internet incurs a fee. Both self and valet parking also incur daily fees.
