Bottom Line

This upscale hotel in the Chow Kit area of Kuala Lumpur is connected to the Sunway Putra Mall and a one-minute walk from a LRT Station. The large 650-room, 33-floor hotel underwent renovations in 2016, resulting in contemporary, neutral-tone spaces that are sleek but have little character. Earth-tone rooms are spacious and come with free bottled water, safes, mini-fridges, LCD TVs, and free Wi-Fi, plus some add balconies and living areas. Quality dining includes an elegant Japanese restaurant, breakfast buffet (for a fee), and lobby lounge with live piano music. A fitness center, outdoor swimming pool with hot tub and kiddy pool, and grand ballroom are also on-site, but there is no spa. Travelers willing to pay a bit more for a swish property with a spa may prefer Shangri-La Hotel, though it's a bit outside the city center.

Scene

Sleek hotel with some minor wear and generic decor

Sunway Putra Hotel is an upscale property with contemporary, albeit at times worn and generic, decor. Shiny marble floors, faux-leather seating in tan and brown hues, and and chain-like patterned carpet all add to the characterless vibe, though a lounge with an atrium, live piano music, and striking staircase adds some pizazz, as does a sleek outdoor pool. While quality dining and comfortable rooms are draws, most guests are attracted to the stellar Chow Kit location near sights and an LRT Station. Families, couples, and business travelers all frequent this hotel.

Location

In central Chow Kit, a five-minute walk to Putra World Trade Center

Set at the edge of the Chow Kit area, Sunway Putra Hotel has an excellent location near ample sights and eateries. It's connected to Sunway Park Mall, a shopping center with a range of shops, restaurants, and a supermarket. Dozens more eateries, shops, and fruit stands are within a 10-minute walk. Business travelers may appreciate that it's a five-minute walk from the Putra World Trade Center, one of the main convention spaces in the city. Additionally, the Putra World Trade Centre LRT Station is a one-minute walk away for farther destinations. Kuala Lumpur International Airport is about a 50-minute drive from the hotel.

Rooms

Chain-like, contemporary rooms with mini-fridges, AC, and hairdryers suites available

Similar to common areas, the 650 rooms have a contemporary and sleek, albeit generic look. Expect neutral-tone decor, clean-lined wood furniture, and patterned carpet. Some feel more modern than others. Marble bathrooms continue the sophisticated look, and most have glass walk-in showers, while upgraded units add separate bathtubs. Wall-mounted hairdryers, magnifying mirrors and free toiletries are provided. Also standard are work desks, LCD TVs with local and international channels, closets with ironing boards, irons, and electronic safes, mini-fridges, free bottled water, and coffee- and tea-making facilities. Some suites add minibars, separate living spaces, and balconies. Note that some past guests have complained of noise issues from adjacent rooms and construction.

Features

Upscale Japanese restaurant, ballroom, and outdoor swimming pool, but no spa

Surprising for a hotel of this caliber, there is no spa. However, leisure facilities include a pleasant outdoor swimming pool with a separate kiddy pool and hot tub, and deck lined with loungers. A decently sized 24-hour fitness center has cardio and strength-training equipment. Quality dining includes a Japanese restaurant that serves teppanyaki and sushi fare for lunch and dinner. The more casual Coffee House is open all day and receives positive reviews particularly for its varied breakfast buffet spread. A lobby lounge has live piano entertainment in the evenings. Several meeting rooms, as well as a large and elegant ballroom are also on-site. Wi-Fi and parking are both free.
