Bottom Line

Despite the somewhat gritty immediate area, the PARKROYAL Serviced Suites Kuala Lumpur is an upscale property that caters to families with its 287 modern studios and large apartments. The kitchenettes, complete with rice cookers and electric stovetops, are designed for longer stays, and the kid-friendly facilities include indoor and outdoor play areas -- some of the reasons this won a 2015 TripAdvisor Traveler's Choice Award for the best family hotel in Malaysia. There are also two outdoor pools, one of which is on the rooftop with city views. There's no full restaurant or bar, but continental breakfast is free. Travelers looking for a more conventional hotel setting can compare rates at the related PARKROYAL Kuala Lumpur, which has three restaurants, a live music bar, and a spa.

Scene

Serviced luxury apartment building with a mashup of styles

The PARKROYAL occupies a bland, corporate-like tower with green-tinted glass windows. Inside, the hotel's long lobby stretches back to a front desk with an overhanging traditional reed canopy that is intentionally out of place in the otherwise spare modern space. An asymmetrical ceiling with jutting panels hides recessed lighting and contrasts with the plain white floor. A small sitting area has tufted leather furniture beside a colorful painting, while another lounge area has wooden chairs beside a wall comprised of chiseled stone blocks. A small glass cooler with an iced local fruit drink awaits arriving guests, mostly families and business travelers on extended stays. Hallways are empty and almost eerie, with white floor tiles and walls, though there's light-wood paneling around the elevator bank leading up to the suites and rooftop pool.

Location

Walking distance to dining and nightlife, but in a slightly gritty area

In the middle of a triangular block, the PARKROYAL Serviced Suites Kuala Lumpur is surrounded by bars and clubs on one side, gritty residential buildings on another, and a food market on yet another. Jalan Alor, a popular food vendor street is a six-minute walk away. The shopping haven of Berjaya Times Square in the Bukit Bintang shopping district, and the Pavilion mall are both within about 15 minutes walking distance, while the Petronas Towers overlooking KL City Park are an eight-minute drive away. Guests can expect around an hour drive to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

Rooms

Contemporary apartments with well-equipped kitchenettes

Guest rooms are split between studio, one- and two-bedroom apartments with pool or city views. All have modern kitchenettes with microwaves, full-sized refrigerators, electric ranges, and rice cookers, along with cookware and dishware. The contemporary decor consists of white tile or wood floors, white cabinets and countertops, with light-wood furnishings and minimalist wall shelves. White bedding is accented with pale-green floral bed-runners and chocolate-brown bed-skirts. Smaller units have breakfast bars, while larger apartments have full dining tables. Living rooms have chaise lounges or couches on dusty-pink area rugs, along with 40-inch flat-screen TVs. The sleek bathrooms have walk-in showers and separate tubs. Other standard features include safes, DVD players, ironing facilities, hairdryers, and clock radios. Some suites add washers and dryers.

Features

Two outdoor pools, play areas, game lounge, and free breakfast

A free continental breakfast is served in a casual room with a buffet that includes hot dishes and cooked eggs. Above the breakfast room, the Mezzanine Lounge has a relaxed reading area as well as an Xbox, foosball table, and air hockey. Other kid-friendly amenities include an outdoor playground with a jungle gym and an indoor play room. There are two outdoor pools -- one on the ground floor with an adjacent fitness center and sauna. The Skypool on the rooftop has a panoramic city view from its sundeck. There are also a rooftop hot tub, as well as gender-divided steam rooms.
