Bottom Line

The 98-room Baymont Inn & Suites Kitty Hawk Outer Banks is a budget hotel in a convenient, if uninspiring location right off the highway, though a quick five-minute walk to the beach. Its affordable rooms are clean but a bit dated and showing wear. However, they have all the basics, including coffeemakers, flat-screen TVs, and mini-fridges plus microwaves. There's a decent-sized outdoor pool off the parking lot, but no other facilities aside from a breakfast room and small business center. The free breakfast receives excellent reviews for its hot and cold options. It's worth comparing rates with the Hilton Garden Inn Outer Banks/Kitty Hawk, which has an oceanfront setting, indoor and outdoor pools, and a gym.

Scene

Roadside budget hotel with pleasant though a bit dated interiors

At first glance, the Baymont Inn & Suites Kitty Hawk Outer Banks looks like a typical two-story motel, but despite the 360-degree parking lot, none of the rooms have exterior entries. There are a couple of side entrances, but the hotel has a proper lobby with a reception desk opposite a lounge that doubles as seating for the breakfast corner. Most of the space is filled with neutral-tone wooden tables and chairs with robin-egg-blue accents -- typical budget chain decor that's showing a little age. One end is partitioned by a low planter wall, with a stained loveseat and a pair of armchairs arranged around a TV. The outdoor pool is a good size, but like most areas, could use a refresh. Guests are an even mix of families and couples who appreciate the quiet setting and proximity to the beach.

Location

Right between the highway and the beachfront

The hotel is located in the middle of a block, equidistant from North Croatan Highway and the oceanfront -- far enough from the former to minimize traffic noise and close enough to the latter to walk to the beach. Note that guests must cross a two-lane road to reach the sand. The Kitty Hawk RV Park is its closest neighbor and several local restaurants are also within walking distance. The Wright Brothers National Memorial, one of the area’s top attractions, is less than a 10-minute drive south, and Jockey’s Ridge State Park, the largest East-Coast natural sand dune, is a 15-minute drive away. The Currituck Beach Lighthouse and Museum is about a 40-minute drive north. Expect a 95-minute drive to Norfolk International Airport.

Rooms

Casual, pleasant rooms with mini-fridges and microwaves

The hotel's 98 carpeted rooms have casual chain decor in muted oceanfront colors, and maritime artwork on the walls. Though a bit dated in some areas -- think heavy striped drapes and red patterned computer chairs -- they're pleasant and clean. Some furnishings are showing a bit of wear, however. The rooms are all basically the same, with two double beds, or a queen or king that means more floor space for sitting areas and desks with roller chairs. Flat-screen TVs sit atop dressers that double as housing for mini-fridges and microwaves. Free Wi-Fi comes standard and all rooms have coffeemakers. The bathrooms have average shower/tub combos. All views are of the surrounding parking lot and rooms are quiet.

Features

Outdoor pool and well-reviewed free breakfast

With the beach just a short walk away, the limited on-site amenities -- no full restaurant or gym -- aren't an issue for most guests. The hotel does have a decent-sized outdoor pool that's gated and surrounded by a small sun deck with a few chairs, loungers, and tables. The free breakfast is served in a corner of the lobby, and it receives excellent reviews from past guests for the array of hot and cold options such as scrambled eggs, waffles, and sausage. A small 24-hour business center has a computer and printer. Wi-Fi is free throughout and free parking is available, with spaces for RVs.
