  • Quiet condo complex with individually owned units

  • Condos have full kitchens, huge patios or balconies, and multiple bedrooms

  • Multiple pools throughout the complex

  • Several well-maintained tennis courts

  • A few barbecue grills are scattered throughout the property

Cons
  • Steep daily resort fee covers parking, Wi-Fi, and use of the in-room safe

  • Few on-site amenities; no restaurant, spa, fitness center, or poolside services

  • Not on the beach

  • Most units do not have air-conditioning

Bottom Line

Aston at Poipu Kai is a mid-range condo-complex comprising individually owned one-, two-, three-, and four-bedroom units. Rooms are spacious, with full kitchens and large lanais, but most do not have air-conditioning. It's quiet, and perhaps a bit boring, with not much to see or do on the property, save for a few small pools and a couple of tennis courts. Though a few rooms have fantastic ocean views, the nearest swimmable beach is about a 15-minute walk from the hotel. Considering there is no restaurant, spa, or workout facility, some travelers may find the daily “amenity fee” a bit steep. For a beachfront option in this price range with restaurants and a fitness center, consider Kiahuna Plantation -- but note that its rooms tend to be more dated than the ones here.

Scene

A quiet condominium resort where not much goes on

Aston at Poipu Kai is a quiet condo complex where not much goes on. Individually owned units are simultaneously occupied by guests and owners -- who collectively tend to skew a bit older. Large, multi-bedroom apartments with full kitchens were seemingly built to accommodate families and large groups, yet there’s hardly anything for kids or teens to do here. Aston at Poipu Kai is ideal for guests who aren’t looking for amenities (or air-conditioning for that matter), but still need a comfortable place to stay while vacationing on the island. The lobby is an unremarkable room in a stand-alone building, located across the street from the condominium units.

Location

In sunny Poipu, on Kauai’s south shore

Located in Poipu, on Kauai’s sunny south shore, Aston at Poipu Kai is subject to the area’s year-round near perfect weather. Poipu, a small resort town filled mostly with hotels and restaurants, is a quiet place where people come to relax and be near the beach. Nearby Koloa has lots of great shopping and dining options as well, and is about a four-minute drive from the hotel. Though the Aston is not located on the beach, Brennecke and Poipu, the two nearest swimmable beaches, are within a 15-minute walking distance. The hotel is about a 25-minute drive from Lihue Airport.

Rooms

Large, individually owned residences -- most without air-conditioning

With one to four bedrooms, units at the Aston at Poipu Kai are individually owned, and therefore individually decorated and furnished. No two units are alike -- some are nicely finished with travertine bathrooms, stainless steel appliances, and granite counters, while others have deteriorating tile floors, vertical blinds, and '80s frosted glass shower doors. Some units have spectacular ocean views, but most overlook the hotel’s well manicured grounds. All condos have common features, such as fully equipped kitchens, huge private lanais, stacked washer/dryer units, and randomly, PlayStation 3 Blu Ray consoles. However, few have air-conditioning and no matter what anyone tries to tell you, Kauai can get awfully hot during the summer months. And when the trade winds aren’t blowing (like they weren’t during our visit) rooms can quickly become airless boxes of heat and humidity, especially if you dare to cook anything.

Features

Not many amenities, especially considering the costly daily amenity fee

There are few features at the Aston at Poipu Kai, which makes the pricey daily “amenity fee” seem a bit ridiculous. There is no on-site restaurant, spa, or workout facility, nor are there any services around the pools or hotel grounds. Instead the fee is said to cover the cost of things like parking, Wi-Fi, daily in-room coffee, and use of the in-room safe. The hotel has three small pool areas, although one was under construction during our visit. The pools, which typically remain quiet during the day, are gated and strictly reserved for guests of the Aston. Along with a room key, guests receive a set of pool keys upon check-in, which allows them to access all three pools on the property. The hotel also has several impressively maintained tennis courts, and a few scattered barbecue grills for guests to use.
