Scene

A fun, boutique hotel with “Atomic Age” design

Poppy, retro-futuristic decor makes the Starlux a unique property amid a land of similar-looking beach hotels. A glass-walled Astro-Lounge at the center of the hotel is a masterful display of so-called “Atomic Age” design -- the futuristic light fixtures and retro furniture feel straight out of an old Jetsons cartoon. During our visit children took turns leaping into the kidney-shaped pool, while a handful of adults sunbathed to the sound of '50s music playing over a loudspeaker. All 45 rooms come with a lava lamp and funky futuristic elements, like geometrically printed wallpaper and space-age lamps. The Starlux is one of five hotels owned and operated by the Morey family of Wildwood. The Moreys also own three amusement piers (Mariner’s, Surfside and Adventure) and two water parks (Raging Water and Ocean Oasis). Guests receive a discount to the Morey establishments (about 40 percent off admission). This, along with other kid-friendly amenities like board games and boogie boards, make the hotel a good family-friendly choice.

Location

A block from the Wildwood Boardwalk and two blocks from the Atlantic Ocean

The Starlux is just over a block from the Wildwood Boardwalk and a two-minute walk to the beach. The immediate neighborhood is filled with gift shops, other hotels, and restaurants galore -- from elegant dining to ice cream parlors. Entertainment piers and beachfront water parks are about a 10-minute walk up the Boardwalk.

Rooms

Atomic Age 1950s decor and modern touches

Rooms range from small Standard Rooms to spacious two-room Efficiency Apartments with kitchens (though no true ovens). Guest can even choose to stay in an authentic Airstream trailer, although the bathrooms aren’t for the faint of heart. Some rooms offer public balconies with pool views while others offer private balconies with a view of Morey’s Piers. The decor is a retro-futuristic mash-up of lava lamps, geometrically patterned wallpaper, funky chairs, and space-age light fixtures. All rooms come with DVD players (a free DVD library is available), microwaves, coffeemakers, and mini-fridges.

Features

A spacious pool, hot tub, game room, and plenty of free perks

Free perks at the Starlux include continental breakfast from May 1 through October 15 (coffee, tea, juice, bagels, and pastries), Wi-Fi, parking (one car per room), board games, a DVD library, beach gear like chairs and boogie boards, and rental bicycles. There’s also a guest laundry room, barbecue grills, game room, and a heated pool with a year-round hot tub. Discounts are offered at Morey’s Piers theme parks and water parks.
