Bottom Line

If you like your camping to feel more old
school and less "glamping," then Jekyll Island Campground will suit
you well. The 18 wooded acres are divided into 206 campsites as well as main areas
that may remind some of summers spent at sleep-away camp; this no-frills but
pleasant campground will let you enjoy the outdoors naturally while still
providing enough amenities to keep you comfortable. The RV spaces include
cable, water, and sewer hookups. Campers opting for the more traditional tent
route can still use the bathrooms and showers on the premises, which are kept
clean. The surroundings are dense with trees and it's very quiet…so quiet in
fact that guests in some areas can hear the waves crash on the nearby Driftwood
Beach. Though the sites are spaced a tad close together -- it can get crowded
if the park is full -- there’s still enough open space for every camper to feel
the privacy of the great outdoors.

Scene

A very non-commercialized site perfect for outdoor enthusiasts

If your idea of fun is time spent in nature,
then you''ll find like-minded folks at this site. A campground that's more on
the rustic side of things, people staying here are keen to have campfires and
classic camping adventures -- including bonfires even during the hot, sticky
days of August. Keep in mind that you'll also be sharing your camp with
critters; that's part of the fun to many, but unless you want raccoons in your
trail mix, follow the site's guidelines for food preparation, storage, and
disposal. The forest-green-painted wooden buildings on the property give a
distinct feeling that you're not only camping but "at camp," adding
to the authenticity of the experience. There’s a community room where people
can hang out or check the Internet; the area looks a lot like an arts and
craft space, with folding tables and chairs. Somehow it's all charming with a bare bones simplicity.

Location

In the woods, on the northern tip of Jekyll Island

Set on
18 wooded acres at the northern tip of Jekyll Island, opposite the Clam Creek
picnic area, this campground will have you sleeping under a canopy of
magnificent oak trees while still placing you close to the beach. Just across
the street from the property through the woods, there’s a community fishing
pier along with a bike path that runs around much of the area. The well-paved
road leading up to the property stretches around the entirety of the island in
a large oval, meaning you can pretty much get anywhere you want to go from here.

Rooms

Unless you want to sleep under the stars, you'll need your own dwelling...

The
grounds are pretty much BYOT or BYORV -- in other words, you've got to bring
your own tent, RV, or whatever you plan to sleep in. That being said, whatever
you decide to rig, set up, or pitch, the spaces are well delineated between 206
available campsites, though they are a little close to each other. In other
words, you won't be alone in the woods if the site is booked to capacity.
Still, even when crowded, there’s enough room for everyone without it feeling
like the city. There’s plenty of nature to go around. Communal men's and women's bathrooms include toilets and showers which are kept clean and hygienic, though they're definitely not fancy.

Features

On-site convenience store, restrooms/showers, bicycle rentals, and a bird sanctuary

So,
here is what you won't find at Jekyll Island Campground…a business center, gym, restaurant, or pool; in other
words, this is camping. (Bring a book to read.) There is, however, a small
campground store on-site and a convenience mart not too far away if you've
forgotten any essentials, like bug spray, which you will need thanks to lots of
mosquitoes. If you're planning a lengthy stay, you should probably come already
stocked with groceries. Guests who are "roughing it" will appreciate
the clean restrooms and showers as well as the coin-operated laundry facilities.
Bicycle rentals are available on-site if you want to explore the island that
way, but many will enjoy just whiling away the hours feeding the birds at the
property's sweet little bird sanctuary. If you have other pets of your own,
they're allowed too.
