Scene

Colonial-estate-turned-hotel with elegant Old World decor

The Phoenix Hotel Yogyakarta - MGallery Collection is situated in an elegant white building originally constructed in 1918 as a colonial estate. It retains much of its Old World charm, pairing Eastern and Western design details for a look that feels grand but on a human scale. Common areas feature tiled floors, bright mosaic details, rich rugs, antique furniture, and elegant wood carvings. The grounds are meticulously maintained, and a highlight of the property is the mosaic-tiled outdoor pool, which includes a fish-fountain at each corner. It's situated in a courtyard that shows off the building's interior facade. There are plenty of spots to sit and relax, including in two spacious bars and lounges. This is a favorite hotel among many travelers to Yogyakarta, and guests who come here range from business guests to tourists, including couples and families.

Location

Bustling neighborhood about a 10-minute walk from Malioboro shopping street

The Phoenix Hotel Yogyakarta is well located in Yogyakarta with plenty of shops and restaurants in the immediate neighborhood. The popular monument Tugu Jogja is just a two-minute walk, and bustling Malioboro shopping street can be reached in about 10 minutes on foot. The Palace of Yogyakarta is a bit too far to reach walking, but can be reached in about 12 minutes by car. The main railway station, Yogyakarta Station, is an eight-minute drive, and Yogyakarta Adisutjipto International Airport is about a 15-minute drive. Airport shuttle service can be arranged for an extra fee, and on-site parking is free.

Rooms

Charming, traditional rooms with modern amenities like minibars and rainfall showers

The Old World, colonial-style of the property continues in guest rooms, which fuse Eastern and Western elements. Glossy tiled floors are paired with traditional rugs and dark wood furniture, while patterned fabrics accent the beds and Eastern art hangs on the walls. Details like wooden figurines, vintage lamps, and ceramic tea sets are a few of the extra details that make rooms feel homey and welcoming. It's all quite elegant, though there's nothing especially fashionable or design-conscious about the decor. Bathrooms are modern with stone tiling and wet-room-style rainfall showers or, in upgraded rooms, separate shower stalls and bathtubs.

Entry-level rooms are a roomy 270 square feet while the largest suite measures a spacious 645 square feet. Rooms feature 32-inch flat screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, safes, and robes, in addition to coffee and tea service with electric kettles (or espresso machines in upgraded rooms) and minibars. Bathrooms are equipped with magnifying mirrors, scales, and free individual toiletries. Turndown service comes nightly and room service is available 24 hours. Some rooms have balconies with a small table and chairs. Guests particularly praise rooms that face the pool for their view and serenity, as rooms facing the street can pick up outside noise.

Features

High-end features for dining, drinking, and wellness, including a beautiful outdoor pool

The extra features at The Phoenix reflect the property's luxury status, starting with the picture-perfect, open-air courtyard surrounded by the building's elegant white interior facade and room balconies. The courtyard holds the hotel's beautiful, mosaic-tiled pool, which features fish-shaped fountains on each corner and is surrounded by tropical plants and wood chairs, tables, and loungers. The hotel also has wellness facilities that include a gym and a spa with a sauna and treatment rooms for massages, manicures, and body wraps.

For dining, the hotel's on-site restaurant, Paprika, features a beautiful mosaic-tiled floor and serves international cuisine, including Eastern and Western options for lunch and dinner. Vino Bar offers wine and cocktails in a spacious, club-style bar that has plenty of lounge areas and even a pool table. There's also the more casual 1918 Terrace Lounge, which extends into an outdoor terrace courtyard with a fountain.
