With its beach-heavy, modern design, Mare Hotel Savona provides a tropical escape on the Mediterranean. Savona is a bit industrial, but the hotel provides a nice spot for a beach vacation and is also a good base for exploring other tourist destinations on the Italian Riviera, such as Bergeggi and Finale Ligure. The on-site restaurants are popular (though a bit pricey), which means snagging a table without a reservation can be somewhat difficult. Rooms on the south side have much better views and are quieter.
Scene
Modern and funky with a beach theme
The hotel decor can be described as beach modern: A corner of the lobby has beach chairs and umbrellas below a ceiling covered by hundreds of bulbs, invoking a starry sky. The funky design extends to the Beach Sushi Restaurant, which features clear tables and colorful waterfall faucets in the bathroom. Ristorante A Spurcacciun-a has bright red chairs, but is a bit more elegant, with a dramatic wine storage area. Tables have running water below the table for diners who choose to eat from the gimmicky “hands-only” menu.
Location
By the sea and outside of the city center
The hotel is on the south side of a main road overlooking the sea and is about a five-minute drive from the center of Savona. Though the on-site restaurants are the main ones in the area, the hotel across the street offers cheaper food. Mare Hotel Savona is about 15 minutes by car from Bergeggi and about a 25-minute drive from Finale Ligure.
Rooms
Large and modern, with balconies
The 66 large rooms are clean and modern, though much more understated than the rest of the hotel. Comfort Rooms have the simplest design, with wave-shaped wooden headboards being the only eye-catching details. The Luxe Rooms are much funkier and a lot more spacious (keep in mind that the Presidential Luxe room has a glass-walled shower that is not hidden from the rest of the room). All rooms have balconies, though rooms facing the street can be loud. There are flat-screen TVs, minibars, safes, and hairdryers. Bathrooms have stall showers.
Features
Pretty saltwater pool, direct beach access, and popular restaurants
The property has a uniquely-shaped saltwater pool with hydro massage and a sandy beach with lounge chairs, cabanas, and umbrellas during the high season. The Ristorante A Spurcacciun-a (serving seafood) and Sushi Beach are popular, and there aren’t many other dining options in the immediate area, so guests are advised to make dinner reservations early. The hotel also has two large meeting rooms and private parking, which is adjacent to the property.
