Bottom Line

The 84-room Grand Hotel Miramare was built in 1903 as one of the first luxury properties in the area and still retains much of its charm today. This renovated, updated property has an outdoor saltwater pool, a blooming private garden for leisurely strolls, and spa with outdoor gazebo for massages. It's located across the street from a public beach on Golfo del Tigullio, so there are great water views, but no private beach access. Bars and restaurants provide both indoor and outdoor seating. Rooms are elegant with high ceilings and renovated bathrooms, but some guests complain about noise on lower level street facing rooms.

Scene

Art Nouveau hotel in the Italian Riviera

Built in 1903, the Grand Hotel Miramare has an eye-catching white facade and turquoise blue shutters. A private garden with palm trees and lavender is a peaceful place for a stroll. The elegant lobby has slightly worn plush purple armchairs and Persian rugs. Modern updates include renovated stucco woodwork, the peaceful saltwater pool, and on-site spa. The atmosphere of the hotel is a nod to the glamorous past of Hollywood stars jetting to the Italian Riviera.

Location

On the Golfo del Tigullio in tourist friendly Santa Margherita Ligure

Santa Margherita Ligure is a picturesque and upscale port town located between Rapallo and Portofino. The Grand Hotel Miramare is built just across the street from the Golfo del Tigullio with quick access to the beach and beautiful views from the hotel rooms and public spaces. The city center is about a 10-minute walk from the front door of the hotel. Pisa International Airport is an hour and a half drive down the coast from the property.

Rooms

Big and airy rooms with renovated bathrooms; some with balconies

The Grand Hotel Miramare has five floors with 84 renovated and spotlessly clean rooms. Rooms have flat-screen TVs, free snacks, and renovated white marble bathrooms. Some rooms have furnished terraces with Golfo del Tigullio views. Rooms have elegant touches including chandeliers, crown moldings, and gold headboards. Floor-to-ceiling windows let in lots of light. Some guests have complained about street level noise on lower floors. Pets are allowed.

Features

Saltwater pool, on-site spa, and an Italian restaurant -- but no beach amenities

Though the Grand Hotel Miramere is located just across the street from a public beach on the Golfo del Tigullio, you won't find umbrellas and sun loungers. There is, however, a chic and quiet outdoor saltwater pool at the hotel. Private gardens are lavish and offer respite from the sun. The classic Ristorante Les Bougainvillée does breakfast, lunch, and dinner but outdoor dining at Le Colonne has better ocean views and feels more glamorous. The on-site spa has indoor treatment rooms or an outdoor gazebo for massages but there is no fitness center. Expect to pay a fee for parking.
