Bottom Line

Located on a touristy stretch of the historic Sultanahmet district, The Byzantium Hotel & Suites is a 70-room upscale hotel with scenic views from its rooftop terrace and many of the rooms. Downsides include dated decor, poor soundproofing between rooms, and street noise. It does offer a few notable features, including a generous breakfast buffet, an on-site spa with a sauna, a steam room, a Turkish bath, a hot tub, a massage room, and a small fitness center. Travelers may also want to consider Celal Sultan Hotel, a tasteful boutique hotel located on a quiet street.

Scene

Popular tourist hotel with an old-fashioned look

The
Byzantium Hotel & Suites is located on one of the more touristy
streets of historic Sultanahmet. It occupies a classical looking
building with a pink facade that resembles a cafe from the outside, with a patio of cane chairs and tables and a menu
displayed prominently on the sidewalk. The reception area is reached
through glass entrance doors and down a few steps, where guests
are received with a welcome drink at a long wooden reception counter. Decor is dated, with a seating area of tired leather sofas, a lobby
bar, and a collection of old-fashioned
looking cane chairs and a cane table. Despite it's old-fashioned feel, it's one of the popular
tourist hotels in the area and is a favorite with mostly families and
couples.

Location

In historic Sultanahmet, within walking distance of major sights

The
Byzantium Hotel & Suites is located on one of the major
thoroughfares in the historic district of Sultanahmet. Popular
sights including the Topkapi Museum, Hagia Sophia, and Blue Mosque are
within easy walking distance, and there are plenty of hotels in the area along with cafes, restaurants, and shops catering
to tourists.- Five-minute walk to Topkapi Palace Museum

  • Seven-minute walk to Basilica Cistern
  • Seven-minute walk to Sultan Ahmet Mosque (Blue Mosque)
  • 11-minute walk to Hagia Sophia
  • 10-minute walk to Istanbul Archaeology Museum
  • 10-minute drive to Galata Bridge
  • 14-minute drive to Istanbul Museum of Modern Art
  • 15-minute drive to Galata Tower
  • 16-minute drive to the Grand Bazaar
  • 18-minute drive to Istiklal pedestrian street
  • 18-minute drive to Taksim Square
  • 44-minute drive to Ataturk International Airport

Rooms

Comfortable rooms with dated decor and cramped bathrooms, some with views

The
guest rooms at The Byzantium Hotel & Suites are clean,
comfortable, and well-equipped with air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs,
minibars (stocked with soft drinks and beer), hairdryers, safes, and electric
kettles. Interiors, however, are dated, with gilded headboards and picture frames and outdated furniture. There are a few signs of wear and tear in some rooms, such as scratched furniture and peeling wallpaper.Standard Rooms tend to be cramped and have snug bathrooms fitted
with small shower stalls. The Suite Rooms are more spacious, with separate seating areas, and they're fitted with kitchenettes equipped
with sinks and mini-fridges. Some rooms, such as Double Suites, have
updated marble bathrooms with spacious showers and rainwater
showerheads. Guests complain about poor
soundproofing between rooms and street noise can be an issue.

Features

Free breakfast, on-site restaurant, spa with Turkish bath, and fitness room

While The Byzantium can be a little underwhelming in its looks, it's fairly appealing when it comes to its features. A generous breakfast buffet is
included in room rates and consists of a wide variety of
different foods, including breads and pastries, fresh fruit, cheese,
eggs, yogurt, and olives. The restaurant is also open for lunch and
dinner and serves traditional Turkish cuisine. Adjacent to the
restaurant is a rooftop terrace with panoramic views of the city's
rooftops, the Blue Mosque, and the Bosphorus. The hotel's on-site spa
facilities include a sauna, a steam room, a Turkish bath, a massage room, and a hot tub, and massages, facials, and
hydrotherapy treatment are available. There's also a fitness room, but it's small and has only two treadmills
and an elliptical. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel.
