San Juan Water Beach Club Hotel
2 Tartak Street

The upper-middle-range Water Club offers 80 rooms and a cool boutique vibe in ritzy Isla Verde, San Juan. Set right opposite the beach, guests have access to free deck chairs, beach umbrellas, and towels, plus a rooftop pool and two on-site restaurants with top-notch food and cocktails -- one offering trendy alfresco lounges overlooking the beach. Rooms include flat-screen TVs, iPod docks, free Wi-Fi, coffeemakers, flashy LED lighting, and some take in gorgeous beach views (while other views are drab). Hotel features aren't as impressive as the more expensive properties nearby -- the pool and fitness center are both small; and there's no spa (although beachside and in-room massages are available). But for travelers looking for a great beach, central location, comfortable rooms, and affordable rates, this  resort is hard to beat.

InterContinental San Juan
5961 Avenida Isla Verde

InterContinental San Juan is an elegant, four-pearl resort located on the beachfront in Isla Verde. While the hotel’s 398 guest rooms aren’t particularly luxurious, they’re nonetheless smart and inviting. All are equipped with minibars, flat-screen TVs, free coffee/tea, and high-end bath products, but many of the small balconies are unfurnished. The property earns top marks for its attractive pool, as well as its easy access to an enviable stretch of Isla Verde Beach. Features include six good restaurants, a spiffy spa and 24-hour fitness center, a small kids’ club, and ample meeting space, but there's a daily resort fee. Travelers may want to compare rates and amenities with the nearby El San Juan Hotel, Curio Collection by Hilton.

La Playita
6 Calle Amapola

La Playita is a lovely two-and-a-half-pearl hotel located in Isla Verde, set on a cape between two picturesque stretches of beach. Its 15 tidy-but-simple rooms include flat-screen TVs and mini-fridges. Amenities are limited to an airy, ocean-view restaurant that serves a free continental breakfast and free Wi-Fi. Plenty of dining and entertainment options can be found along Avenida Isla Verde, which is easily accessible on foot. Guests interested in more on-site features might consider the nearby Courtyard by Marriott Isla Verde Beach Resort, which also offers direct beach access.

Verdanza Hotel
8020 Tartak Street

Verdanza Hotel is an inviting, three-and-a-half-pearl property located in Isla Verde. The hotel’s 222 guest rooms are clean and smart, featuring mini-fridges plus bathrooms with shower/tub combos. While it’s not particularly ritzy, Verdanza offers everything you would expect from a reliable, upper-middle-range hotel, including a nice pool, a handful of decent dining options, and a central location. Verdanza pays a special nod toward pet owners with its pet-friendly policy (for a fee), private off-leash park, and support of a local animal rescue organization. Travelers who prefer to stay right on the beach might prefer San Juan Water Beach Club Hotel instead.

Máre St. Clair Hotel
6165 Ave Isla Verde

Máre St. Clair Hotel is a pleasant, three-pearl property located at the eastern end of Isla Verde beach. The hotel’s 450 studios and apartments are clean and practical, offering full kitchens plus private balconies or terraces. Unlike most self-catering properties, Máre St. Clair Hotel features a diverse line-up of amenities, including a free breakfast buffet as well as a game room and a bar. Add in a great location in Isla Verde, within walking distance of shops and restaurants, and this property offers quite good value -- particularly for families. The main drawback here is that Wi-Fi is only free in the lobby, but it can be accessed in rooms for a daily fee. Another option could be the Hyatt House San Juan, which also has kitchenettes, but it doesn’t have direct beach access.

The Ritz-Carlton, San Juan
6961 Ave Gobernadores

**This property was significantly impacted by Hurricane Maria in September 2017 and is currently closed until April 8, 2018. We will update our review as soon as we have more information. **Marriott’s top-tier hotel in the capital of San Juan offers 416 rooms and suites and is an easy five-minute drive from the airport along Isla Verde beach. Rooms are contemporary and upscale if a tad generic, and most are without balconies. Most guests spend their time on the sand, or at the lively outdoor pool where attentive service is a focus. Just watch out for the super-pricey cocktails. In the evenings, the lobby bar is the place for small plates and pre-dinner cocktails before dressed-up guests (and some locals) make their way to their reserved tables at on-site restaurants BLT Steak and Il Mulino. The hotel attracts a mix of post-cruise goers, conference attendees, and leisure guests on long weekend getaways. Wi-Fi, tennis, and a fitness center is free, unless you count the 18 percent luxury resort fee added to the bill.

Coral By The Sea
2 Calle Rosa

Coral by the Sea is a budget property offering 68 basic rooms in the tourist hotspot of Isla Verde. The central, yet affordable, location is the main highlight here -- it's a short walk to Isla Verde Beach, nightlife, and convenience stores. Two on-site eateries are a plus: There’s a diner-style café and a traditional Puerto Rican restaurant, both serving good food, and guests receive 10 percent off. On the downside, the property lacks a pool and fitness center, and outdated interiors feel shabby -- guests frequently comment on the poor level of cleanliness. Still, it works as a no-frills overnight stay that’s close to the beach and airport, or as a cheap home base for island explorers. Those seeking affordable rates with a pool could try nearby Villa Verde Inn.

Courtyard by Marriott Isla Verde Beach Resort
7012 Boca de Cangrejos Avenue

The upper-middle-range Courtyard by Marriott Isla Verde Beach Resort is a compact, high-energy property set on a beautiful, deep stretch of beach considered one of San Juan’s best. A 2016 overhaul has given its 260 rooms and suites a fresh new look with chic coastal elements that feel more "boutique" than "chain hotel." They also come with balconies, microwaves, and mini-fridges which guests appreciate. All windows are soundproofed, yet some guests are bothered by plane noise overhead -- the airport is virtually across the road. The Marriott crams in plenty of features with two 24-hour pools, a casino, a decent 24-hour fitness center, live entertainment, plus several dining and drinking options, although many find the food overpriced. Travelers looking for a beachfront location away from the airport could try the San Juan Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino

Embassy Suites by Hilton San Juan Hotel & Casino
8000 Tartak Street,

Embassy Suites San Juan is a three-and-a-half-pearl hotel located in San Juan’s fashionable Isla Verde neighborhood. The hotel is within a six-minute walk of Isla Verde Beach, along with nightlife and entertainment options. Its 299 suites are large and cheerful, offering separate sitting areas with sofa beds and kitchenettes with microwaves. The decor throughout the rooms and common areas is generic and indicative of the chain, but the pool area is attractive and the free happy hour snacks and cocktails are a thoughtful extra. Still, travelers looking for direct beach access might prefer the Courtyard by Marriott Isla Verde Beach Resort.

Tryp By Wyndham Isla Verde
4820 Ave Isla Verde

TRYP by Wyndham Isla Verde is a three-pearl hotel located in its namesake Isla Verde, a short walk from restaurants, bars, casinos, and Isla Verde Beach. All 115 guest rooms are eye-catching, and there are number of creatively themed rooms geared toward different types of travelers. In public spaces, the hotel has a splashy modern design, which some guests might find too flashy. But the outdoor pool, restaurant, and other facilities are bright and appealing. As an alternative, the upper-middle-range Courtyard by Marriott Isla Verde Beach Resort is a similar chain property with an in-house casino, but rates can be higher.
