Hotel Plaza
Almendros is a budget hotel located along Isla Mujeres' central tourist street, Avenida Hidalgo. Although it certainly isn't the most stylish hotel on the island, this property is a solid, affordable base for guests interested in shopping, dining, and swimming. The island's largest beach,
Playa Norte, is a six-minute walk from the hotel. The 39 guest rooms are incredibly dated, but have kitchenettes. Limited amenities include an outdoor pool set within a pleasant courtyard and free Wi-Fi. For a hotel with free breakfast, travelers can try the Hotel Playa La Media Luna, though as a three-pearl property, rates tend to be higher.
Scene
A simple downtown hotel catering toward budget-conscious travelers
Hotel Plaza
Almendros' plain entrance sign advertises “Pool, fan, air-conditioning,
telephone, microwave oven, TV, wireless Internet,” a perfect reflection of
its straightforward selling points. The hotel doesn't attempt to attract guests
with flash and sophistication, instead it promises a practical place to sleep --
and that's exactly what you get.The lobby's spartan tiled floors and uninspired furniture match the decor found in the
unfussy guest rooms. The pool and courtyard area is by far the best-looking
part of the hotel, and naturally, that's where most of the guests seem to
hang out. During our visit, there were lots of young kids splashing in the
pool, and adults relaxing on the surrounding sun loungers. The atmosphere
quiets down at night, when most guests head out to the restaurants and bars
found outside the hotel, along Avenida Hidalgo.
Location
Central location, at the heart of the island's dining and nightlife scene
Hotel Plaza
Almendros is located along Avenida Hidalgo, the busiest street on Isla Mujeres.
In the evening, this bustling street comes to life with music, lights, and
crowds of tourists. The hotel is surrounded by other hotels, as well as shops,
restaurants, and bars. There are dozens of dining and entertainment options
found within less than a one-minute walk. Beautiful
Playa Norte can be reached in a six-minute walk, and the Ultramar Ferry
Terminal is also a five-minute walk away. Dolphin Discovery and Garrafon Reef
Park can be reached in a 15-minute drive, and Punta Sur is
four-and-a-half-miles away. Cancun International Airport can be reached in 23 minutes by car.
Rooms
Rooms include kitchenettes and balconies or patios
Guest rooms
at Hotel Plaza Almendros are utilitarian, with stark white walls and tile flooring. Firm mattresses are covered with thin polyester bedspreads. All rooms include a
small kitchenette with a mini-fridge,
coffeemaker, and microwave. A few plates, cups, and utensils are stocked in
cupboards under the sink. Small wooden dining tables show quite a bit of
wear-and-tear. Personal safes and hangers are stashed inside austere closets, and flat-screen
TVs are mounted to the walls. Generic bathrooms include shower stalls and
off-brand toiletries. Ground
floor rooms surround the hotel's pretty courtyard and pool area. Each room has a
private patio facing toward the courtyard, furnished with two chairs and a
table. Upper level rooms feature balconies with views over the pool or buzzing
Avenida Hidalgo, and noise can be an issue.
Features
Appealing courtyard with outdoor pool and free Wi-Fi
The hotel
is centered around a grassy courtyard area with an outdoor pool. There are a few lounge
chairs around the water, but no umbrellas, although palm trees offer some shade.
The pool features a small block barrier which separates the shallow end from
the deep end. The hotel also provides two desktop computers in the lobby for guests to use, and free Wi-Fi is available throughout. Breakfast isn't served and there isn't a restaurant on-site.
