This quaint, 10-room bed-and-breakfast is on Vieques Island is full of the charming, personal touches that so many chain hotels lack. It's an undeniably romantic pick, with phenomenal ocean views from the stone infinity pool and open-air lobby; airy, Mediterranean-style architecture; and wild horses roaming the grounds. Three bedrooms are in the main "inn," and others can be found in various bungalows dotting the property. The clean, lofty rooms are styled with eclectic antiques and tropical flowers -- but they're not quite luxurious and are showing minor wear. The on-site beach is a bit rocky, but some of the best beaches in the Caribbean are a short drive away.
Location
Remote and serene locale on Vieques Island, with multiple natural attractions nearby
Perched on a plot of untouched Puerto Rican soil overlooking the northern, Atlantic-side of the island, the Inn on the Blue Horizon offers guests a serene oasis-like experience. It's just a 30-minute flight from Puerto Rico's mainland and a 5-minute drive from the island's airport.
This unique little island offers travelers pure, undeveloped land, mainly thanks to the US Navy's former use of a good portion of the island for a bombing range. After a series of protests, the Navy left in 2003, and the Navy land is now a national wildlife refuge. A fair number of restaurants, pubs, and even coffee shops can be found on the island -- but no chains. There are no casinos, golf courses, or any typical tourist attractions, and much of Isla de Vieques' attractions are nature-oriented: Its stunning, untouched white-sand beaches and famous bioluminescent bay are the highlights, but it also features walking trails, 300-year-old trees, and some of the top snorkeling spots in Puerto Rico.
