The 167-room Sheraton Athlone is an upscale property right in the heart of Athlone, just a five-minute walk to the River Shannon. There's plenty of dining, drinking, and sights within an easy walk of the hotel, and the hotel has spa, indoor pool, and fitness center -- rarities in central Athlone. Rooms are a mixed bag -- some are plain, but modern, while others have more style. Two restaurants and a bar keep guests fed and entertained, and the events space is popular for corporate events and weddings, meaning the property is often filled with groups. As an alternative, those with a more secluded retreat in mind should consider the Wineport Lodge, which has lots more style and is only a 10-minute drive from Athlone.
Scene
Modern hotel that's a destination property with spectacular views from higher floors
Built in 2008, the hotel has a fresh and modern feel to it, with a nice dash of Athlone character. Many local elements are reflected in the design of the hotel, including bronze wall art mimicking the flow of the Shannon River, and carpet and wall art behind reception reflecting the crossing of the Shannon. One of the hotel's suites, the Siege Suite, is named after the famous siege of Athlone, possibly one of the most important historical battles in Ireland's history. Since the hotel is connected to a shopping mall, the atmosphere can be quite busy, with crowds of shoppers and groups gathering. Add to that the fact that this is one of the tallest buildings in central Ireland -- with outstanding views of the countryside from upper floors -- and the vibe can definitely get lively. On the other hand, however, there are places for quiet and tranquility, with the elegant Sirana Spa providing a relaxing escape. With its excellent location and connection to a shopping mall, its adult-only tower, family-friendly amenities, and events spaces, this hotel draws all sorts of travelers, including couples, families, groups, individuals, and business travelers.
Location
In the center of Athlone, close to shopping, dining, and the train station
Located in the middle of Athlone town, this hotel is entered from a little street on one side, or from a shopping mall on the other. The attached shopping center, known as Town Centre, has more than 60 national and international retailers. It's just two to three minutes on foot from the train station -- the Athlone stop on the Dublin-to-Galway/Westport line. The streets in central Athlone are lined with charming buildings, boutiques, restaurants, and pubs -- it's perfect to explore on foot, and the banks of the River Shannon are just a five-minute walk from the hotel. It's a 10-minute walk to the Athlone Castle and Visitor Center. Out in the countryside, it's a 10-minute drive to the scenic shores of Lough Ree and a 25-minute drive to Clonmacnoise Monastery. The main motorway west from Dublin, the M6, is a few hundred meters away -- this provides easy access to the capital and its airport within 80 minutes, or to Galway (an artsy city on Ireland's west coast) in 50 minutes.
Rooms
Spacious, modern rooms with free Wi-Fi, plus an adult-only tower
Spacious rooms are modern and fresh, with leather and walnut furniture, including tall upholstered headboards above Sweet Sleeper beds, armchairs, and large full-length mirrors. Decoration is minimal in most rooms, and the color scheme is beige. Unfortunately, many of the lower-category rooms come across as utterly plain, and have little local character. The Deluxe King Room that we visited had one lone piece of abstract art on the wall. Suites are a bit more interesting and more spacious, with patterned wallpaper on accent walls plus brightly colored armchairs and a loveseat. These rooms also use more eye-catching fabrics in upholstery and accents throughout. All rooms include electric kettles for tea or coffee, free Wi-Fi, and flat-screen plasma TVs. The 12-story Sheraton Tower is for adults only, and family suites are located near the pool and restaurants. Bathrooms in all rooms are modern, with above-counter sinks, separate tubs and showers, hairdryers, under-counter lighting, and upscale toiletries. Some rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows with nice views of the city.

Room service is available.Inspired by the sand, heat, and colors of the Sahara Desert, the elegant Sirana Spa offers a variety of treatments, including massage, salon services, exfoliation, facials, and mud rituals. An aquatic area features a 20-meter swimming pool, children’s pool, whirlpool, and hydrotherapy features, as well as a steam room and sauna. The fitness center is equipped with LifeFitness machines and free weights, and is refreshingly up to date.
