This four-pearl, 96-room hotel has a quiet waterfront location on Willingdon Island overlooking Cochin Harbor. Vivanta is Taj's upscale brand, and rooms all have air-conditioning and marble bathrooms with deep-soaking tubs. Some offer lovely sea views, while others overlook the gardens, though furniture can be worn. There are four excellent dining options, including a traditional seafood restaurant, plus a bar on the jetty with great sunset views. Amenities include an outdoor infinity pool, Ayurvedic spa, fitness center, and a 24-hour business center for corporate guests. There's a free sunset cruise, and guests can arrange a trip to the hotel's private island at the tour desk. Travelers looking to stay somewhere more central should consider rates at Brunton Boatyard in Fort Cochin, a historic boutique hotel offering free bikes.
Scene
Upscale chain hotel with old colonial-style decor and modern touches
This upscale hotel is situated right on Willingdon Island's waterfront and is divided between two different wings. The historic Victorian part of the property has old-fashioned decor and a colonial-style ambience, while the new building has better views and modern facilities. Interiors are done in a mix of classic decor and contemporary touches, with highly-polished floors, wooden ceilings, antique furnishings, and big floral displays. The buildings are enveloped by perfectly manicured lawns and towering palm trees, while the landscaped infinity pool provides unbeatable ocean views and comfortable daybeds for tanning. In the evenings, many guests head to the bar on the jetty for sundowners. The hotel has a peaceful and sophisticated ambiance, catering to both business travelers and tourists, particularly families and couples.
Location
Quiet waterfront location on Willingdon Island, a short ferry ride from Fort Cochin
This historic hotel is located in a quiet corner of Willingdon Island. It's set in an industrial area that's far from local sights, though frequent ferries to Fort Cochin and Ernakulam are easily accessible outside the hotel. There's nothing of note to see or do within walking distance. Popular attractions in Fort Cochin include the ancient Chinese Fishing Nets, the Jewish Quarter and the Santa Cruz Cathedral. There's also a free sunset cruise for guests, and boat trips to hotel's own private island can be arranged. It's a 20-minute taxi ride to the train station in Ernakulam, on the mainland, while Cochin International Airport is just over an hour's drive away.
Rooms
Compact rooms with air-conditioning and flat-screen TVs, but furniture can be worn
The hotel has 96 rooms and suites blending traditional colonial-style decor with modern elements. All are individually furnished and well-finished, but some standard rooms are a little on the small side. The decor is kept simple, with neutral tones, hardwood floors, and dark wood furniture. Unfortunately, some of the furniture was looking a bit worn when we visited. Double beds are dressed in fresh white linens, and windows look onto onto sea or garden views. Keep in mind that some rooms are outfitted with twin beds. Amenities include flat-screen TVs, DVD players, air-conditioning, minibars, tea/coffee facilities, safes, robes and slippers, and free Wi-Fi. Suites add extra living space and balconies, and interconnecting rooms and extra beds are also available. Marble-finish bathrooms are spotlessly clean, and all include deep-soaking tubs, separate showers, hairdryers, and free toiletries.
Features
Four restaurants, infinity pool, Ayurvedic spa, fitness center, and freebies include sunset cruises, yoga, and Wi-Fi
The hotel's amenities are mostly geared toward relaxation, though there's a 24-hour business center and modern conference spaces for corporate guests. The infinity pool is a go-to in the daytime, offering stunning ocean views and sun loungers for relaxing. Guests can unwind at the high-end Jiva Spa, which offers Ayurvedic massage treatments, plus a hot tub and steam room. There's a 24-hour fitness center with modern cardio equipment, free weights, and resistance equipment, but it's on the small side. The hotel also has a small artificial beach -- though swimming isn't an option -- and a spice garden.
There are four excellent dining options, plus a bar on the jetty that's great for sundowners. The Rice Boat is a traditional seafood restaurant with excellent views of the backwaters, while The Pavilion specializes in authentic Chinese and Thai dishes. The Pepper is a multi-cuisine buffet restaurant that's open all day, and Dolphin's Point offers outdoor seating and a barbecue every night. An English and Indian breakfast buffet is served daily for a fee, and room service is available around the clock.
Aside from the popular free sunset cruise, other no-cost extras include high tea and yoga session for all guests. Trips to a private island can be arranged for a fee. There's a kids' pool, toys, video games, and supervised activities (for a fee) on offer for those traveling with children. Other services include a 24-hour front desk, concierge, laundry, bike rentals, free valet parking, and free Wi-Fi. Pets are welcome at the hotel at no extra cost.
