Bottom Line

Perhaps Panaji's best-known hotel, Hotel Fidalgo is a three-and-a-half-pearl city center hotel popular with tourists and business travelers alike. The 101 air-conditioned rooms and suites are pleasant and well maintained, and many have city views. But it's the dining options that really stand out with multiple restaurants that attract plenty of regular local customers and offer a variety of regional Indian specialties along with Goan mainstays and all-you-can-eat buffets. There's also a spa, a fitness center, and the requisite outdoor swimming pool, along with six meeting spaces, the largest of which can seat up to 350 people. While this is one of the best places to stay in town without having to spend a fortune, the lack of parking might drive guests elsewhere, such as the more budget-friendly Ginger Goa near the bus stand.

Scene

Upper-middle-range landmark hotel with a busy lobby and good restaurants that attract local visitors

Hotel Fidalgo is an upper-middle-range landmark hotel that opened up in the heart of Panaji way back in 1974. The big lobby features classic decor, with low false ceilings with recessed lighting that are supported by marble columns and a smattering of seating areas. A large tile mural depicting scenes from Goan life sits across from the lobby's bank of elevators and adds a bit of local flavor to the otherwise generic, but not unpleasant, space. The hotel is often busy (particularly in the lobby), with domestic and international tourists and business travelers alike, along with a regular stream of locals dropping by to dine at the Fidalgo's many well-known restaurants.

Location

In the pedestrian-friendly center of Panaji, a short walk from the ferry terminal

Hotel Fidalgo is located right in the old city center of Panaji, about a 10-minute walk south of the ferry terminal, in a pedestrian-friendly area with lots of shops and restaurants nearby. It's about a 10-minute drive or 25-minute walk to the bus stand, from where travelers can easily catch buses to elsewhere in Goa. However, it's much easier to go by taxi, and there are normally cabs waiting outside of the hotel. Candolim and Calangute take around half an hour to 45 minutes to reach by car. Anjuna and Vagator take a tad bit longer (but usually no more than an hour). The nearest railhead, Karmali Railway Station, is a 20-minute drive away. The international airport in Goa takes around an hour to reach, or a little less if traffic is light.

Rooms

Variety of air-conditioned rooms and suites, all with modern amenities and many with pool views

This hotel offers five types of room, all with clean and well-maintained interiors and solid amenities that include Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, safes, flat-screen TVs, minibars, and coffee- and tea-making facilities. Most rooms follow a similar decor scheme, with light-wood floors and wall paneling, a mix of light-wood finish and white furniture, white bed covers with satiny saffron-hued throw cushions and bed runners, and heavy black-out curtains. Bathrooms are sleek and modern, with walk-in showers or shower/tub combos, magnifying mirrors, hairdryers, and basic toiletries. Standard Rooms and their sleeker Premium Class counterparts all have street-facing views. The larger Premium Class units offer a mix of street- and pool-facing views. The hotel also offers a few Executive suites with pool views and separate living areas with tables, chairs, desks, and sofas. There's also a single Fidalgo Suite on the fourth floor, with pool views and a separate living room and bedroom with a four-poster bed. The bathroom in this unit is particularly impressive, with a shower/tub combo featuring both a jetted tub and wall-mounted shower jets.

Features

Excellent and extensive dining options plus pool, fitness center, spa, and business facilities -- but no parking

Hotel Fidalgo offers tons of amenities geared toward tourists and business travelers alike. Fidalgo is known for its restaurants, and plenty of locals come here regularly just to get a bite to eat. Aunty Maria, located on the street level, is the only 24-hour restaurant in town, and offers all sorts of baked goods and deli-style items (think sandwiches and salads) along with a solid selection of Indian food and an extensive breakfast buffet (only included in some rates). Other options include Bhojan, with famous all-you-can-eat Gujurati thalis for lunch and dinner, Chilli n Spice, with food from around the world, and O Goa, which serves South Indian and Goan specialties for all three meals, with late hours on weekend nights. Room service is also available around the clock. At the heart of the hotel in a red-brick outdoor courtyard sits a large lagoon-style swimming pool with a small adjacent kids' pool and a bank of shaded lounge chairs. The fitness center here is a good size, with cardio machines and a few pieces of weight-training equipment. There's also a spa, Tantrah, with beauty treatments, hair styling, and massages. Business facilities include a large banquet hall for up to 350 people plus a number of smaller indoor and outdoor event spaces. There's also a business center and Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel. Note that there is no on-site parking available. The hotel does offer free transfers to the airport and railway station in Karnali.
