Bottom Line

Calangute Grande is a two-and-a-half-pearl vacation hotel located in the heart of busy Calangute, within easy walking distance of shops and restaurants. There are 29 sleek, modern rooms and suites, all with air-conditioning and balconies, spread across three floors. Amenities include a restaurant that's open for all three meals (buffet breakfast included in some room rates), and room service and children's menus are available. There's also a swimming pool, but it's small and doesn't get much natural light, making it less than ideal for those who want to sunbathe. There's no fitness center or spa here; guests looking for such facilities might be better off spending a bit more for a stay at the slightly swankier Citrus Goa just up the road, which has a small spa and gym.

Scene

Simple budget hotel with elevator, popular with international and domestic travelers

This budget-friendly hotel is located in a simple salmon-hued building on a main thoroughfare in Calangute. Inside is a simple lobby with a wood-finish reception desk and a few framed nature scenes on the wall, plus an old bench-style sofa and a pile of books for guests to peruse. An elevator leads up to three floors of rooms, and there's a dark bar and restaurant with ceilings plastered with gigantic coffee ban decals and windows that look out onto  a small pool area out back. The hotel attracts a mix of travelers, including lots of Indian and international tourists -- including families and couples -- but it doesn't draw a ton of package vacationers.

Location

In the heart of Calangute, within walking distance from shops, restaurants, and the beach

As the name suggests, Calangute Grande is situated in the heart of Calangute, about a 10-minute walk from the beach. It's in a busy, touristy area with plenty of roadside stalls selling beachwear and souvenirs, shops, restaurants, and other hotels. The Saturday Night Market in Arpora is around a 15-minute drive from the hotel. Anjuna Beach and its weekly flea market are about a 20-minute drive away. Old Goa and the Goan capital city of Panaji is 35 minutes away by road. Getting to the airport in Vasco de Gama can take anywhere from an hour to 90 minutes by taxi, depending on traffic.

Rooms

Air-conditioned rooms with balconies and flat-screen TVs

This hotel offers sleek, air-conditioned Deluxe Rooms, larger Executive Deluxe Rooms, and huge one-bedroom Honeymoon Suites, plus some renovated rooms on the third floor that are advertised as Premium units. Rooms offer a similar decor scheme featuring beige-colored marble tiling, off-white walls with small framed art prints of flowers, and high ceilings. They're lit by a mix of lantern and recessed lighting, and dark-wood furniture includes comfortable beds with white linens and red throw cushions and runners. The Honeymoon Suites feature a gray-and-gold decor scheme. All rooms have balconies, though those in the Deluxe units are small and really just suitable for stepping out for fresh air. Standard amenities include individual air-conditioning units, kettles, minibars, safes, flat-screen TVs. Wi-Fi is free in rooms and throughout the hotel. Bathrooms are modern, with bowl-like vessel sinks and wetroom-style showers (no shower curtains). Soap and hairdryers are provided. Honeymoon Suite bathrooms upgrade to tubs.

Features

Black Cafe restaurant for all three meals, small outdoor swimming pool, and free Wi-Fi

Amenities at this hotel are geared towards tourists. There's a small pool out back that’s just about big enough to swim laps. There are a few poolside lounge chairs, but the space doesn’t get much sunlight so those wanting direct rays are better off heading to the beach. Other amenities include a bar and restaurant, Black Cafe, that's open for all three meals, complete with a children's menu, afternoon tea, and room service. Breakfast is served buffet-style, with lots of Indian and international items, but it's not included in all room rates. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel. Limited parking is available, free of charge. Laundry service and airport transfers are also available, for a fee.
