Located on a bustling side street that leads down to one of Baga's most famous attractions -- Tito's Nightclub -- this budget hotel is good for those in search of nothing more than a cheap place to crash. It's popular with domestic tourists on tight budgets, and gets a mix of families, couples, and groups of friends. Rooms are by and large grubby, though some of the higher-category units feel a bit fresher thanks to colorful throw cushions and wood-panel floors. Amenities include free Wi-Fi and a 24-hour bar and restaurant with room service. While it's a good spot for those who want to be within stumbling distance of Baga's bars and clubs, plenty of better budget options exist in the area, such as Santiago Beach Resort, housed in an old Goan home.
Scene
Budget property with limited facilities, popular with Indian travelers including families and groups of young men
Ancora Beach Resort is a simple, three-story budget hotel that's been around since 1974 (it was the first property on its street). Check-in takes place in a lower mezzanine area with a glassed-in reception booth and the relics of a few internet cafe-style computer terminals off to one side. Rooms are cramped across three upper stories, all with narrow interior and exterior hallways. The only real common area is the 24-hour restaurant on the ground floor, right by reception. Most guests are Indian budget travelers, including some families and lots of groups of young men looking to party. Its location in the heart of Baga's nightlife strip makes it less than ideal for those interested in a good night's sleep. However, past guests report that security is good and an overall feeling of safety.
Location
On Tito's Lane in the heart of Baga, a few minutes' stroll from the beach
Ancora Beach Resort is located on crowded Tito's Lane, named as such because it leads down to the famous Tito's nightclub at the edge of Baga Beach. The street is filled with small shops, cafes, bars, and other hotels. Although it's narrow and usually crowded with pedestrians, it gets a fair bit of traffic owing to the fact that there's a large municipal parking lot at the base. Getting to the beach takes just a few minutes on foot, and guests with motorbikes or cars will find plenty more to see and do within a short drive of the hotel. Anjuna, a sandy cove with black rocks, is a 20-minute drive north of the hotel. Getting to Candolim, on the Arabian Sea, takes about 20 minutes by road in the opposite direction. It's a 10-minute drive to the Saturday Night Market in Arpora and a 45-minute drive to the Goan capital city of Panaji. Factor in at least 90 minutes to get to the airport, depending on traffic.
Rooms
Simple rooms with flat-screen TVs and balconies; some in need of a fresh paint of coat
This hotel offers 28 rooms, and all come with free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, simple furnishings, and the option of air-conditioning for an extra fee. Entry-level Standard Rooms are shabby -- if not grubby -- and simple with tile floors, simple plywood furniture, and dirty walls in desperate need of a fresh coat of paint. Deluxe and Super Rooms are a bit nicer, with mini-fridges, colorful throw cushions, and wood panel floors. Rooms have decent bathrooms with glass partitions between the toilet areas and showers; hot water is always available. Views are nothing spectacular, but balconies in all rooms are still a nice touch.
Features
24-hour bar and restaurant, nightclub, laundry services, and free Wi-Fi
Amenities at this hotel are quite limited, and that's reflected in the price. There is a 24-hour restaurant/bar, which offers room service around the clock and a menu of vegetarian and non-vegetarian cuisine aimed at Indian travelers. Ancora also has its own nightclub, Pitstop, that's free for anyone staying in house if they get there by 9 o'clock. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel. While there's no parking, there is a municipal lot (parking for a fee) a four-minute walk away. The hotel can also arrange for taxis, tours, motorbikes, and laundry services
