Bottom Line

Opened in the 1980s, the three-and-a-half-pearl Royal Plaza Hotel still retains its colored glass mosaics, marble columns, and brass accents, giving it a classic, but dated look. The 117 guest rooms feel slightly more contemporary, thanks to upgrades to furniture and flooring. All rooms have AC, minibars, soft towels, and free Wi-Fi, and some add balconies. The rooftop pool is open during warmer months and has nice views, a sundeck, and occasional events. There are also a snack bar, small gym, and spa. A conference room and computer station are available, and the main restaurant serves a quality breakfast buffet for a fee. The underground parking is a pain, but a large public lot is across the street. Travelers looking for a more historic stay may prefer La Torre del Canonigo in the Old Town.

Royal Plaza Hotel

Scene

Dated, classically styled hotel primarily popular with couples

Royal Plaza feels like a once upscale hotel that's turned dated over the years with its classical styling of solid wood doors, plush hallway carpeting, color film wall mosaics, carpet runners that trace marble stairs, brass banisters, and the VHS player in the lounge. While the look is old-fashioned, the property provides quality service and sufficient amenities. Plus, while the hotel’s style is a bit tired, it’s in good condition, most likely thanks to the continual refurbishments. In 2016, rooms got new floors and light fixtures, and in 2017 the rooms were soundproofed and received upgraded mini-fridges and TVs. Unlike most hotels in Ibiza, Royal Plaza is open all year. In slow season, the guests are mostly corporate, while high season sees a lot of European couples.

Rooms

Classical decor in spacious rooms; some with balconies

The 117 rooms here have a less dated vibe than the rest of the hotel, though they aren't quite modern. Things like high-quality plastic “wood” paneled walls with built-in bedside tables, brass light fixture bases, and the classic but characterless laminate wood furniture keep the rooms feeling dated, though contemporary living room furniture in the Suites, and 2016-installed laminate floors are more up-to-date touches.

Guests can expect satellite channels, a free minibar, and slippers in each room. Most rooms have a wall of floor-to-ceiling windows that help keep things bright, though the double layer of drapes work well for late mornings. Bathrooms have a great selection of toiletries, from bar soap and conditioner to shoe shine sponges and shave kits. The travertine countertops and old-fashioned sinks feel dated, but the repurposing of built-in tissue box holders as hand towel racks is creative. Expect soft bath towels, magnifying mirrors, and bidets.

Single and Twin Rooms are single occupancy only. Some of the Double Rooms have balconies, and all have a double bed made up of two individually fitted single beds. Junior Suites have a separate, contemporary living area with a couch and TV. Both Double Rooms and Junior Suites have balconies with wicker chairs, and all rooms have a pillow menu.

Features

Rooftop pool deck with spa and gym, two restaurants, and classy lobby bar

Royal Plaza houses a good number of features for a city hotel, including a rooftop pool area and two restaurants. The 6th-floor rooftop is home to the hotel’s small tiled pool, a square kiddy pool, and a sunny lounger-lined area. This space is only officially open during the summer, when there is also a small plastic bar station set up so guests can grab drinks, though it’s not always manned. The lounge area is large, covered in fake grass and stocked with quality white stretched canvas loungers, cushioned loungers covered with white fitted sheets, and a covered wicker seating area. The views stretch from neighboring buildings out to the castle and mountains.

Also on the rooftop deck are a small gym with hardwood floors, free weights, and a few machines; bathrooms with shower stalls; and a bright spa area. This level is also home to an indoor restaurant and snack bar that serves Spanish and Mediterranean cuisine for a fair price, and doubles as the pool’s towel station. Expect lots of windows, painted green tables, a bar slinging drinks, and columns of rose-tinted glass.

The main restaurant, Le Relais, is located off the reception area and serves up a quality breakfast buffet, lunch, and dinner. Breakfast consists of light music, cereals and fruits, cold cuts, Nespresso machine drinks, hot items, and Spanish staples like "sopressata" and "quince". Opposite Le Relais, on the same lobby level, there’s a bar with faux-leather couches and a large flat-screen TV with VHS player.

Business features consist of a standard meeting room and a business computer with printer. Other hotel features include a glass display in the lobby selling perfumes, soaps, and candles, impossibly tight underground parking, and free Wi-Fi.
