Cons
  • Decor and furnishings are a bit dated throughout

  • Previous guests staying on the ground floor have complained about noise

  • Free Wi-Fi connection can be finicky

Bottom Line

This 114-room family-run budget hotel is in need of some style updates, but it's just seconds from the beach. The waterfront location on San Antonio Bay is undoubtedly its winning feature, and the pleasant pool deck sits right overlooking the sea. Rooms are well-sized and have flat-screen TVs, but they're showing some wear, and notably missing safes and mini-fridges. Additionally, not all have furnished balconies or patios, and some have views of a wall. A mediocre restaurant and bar are on-site, while free Wi-Fi adds to its value. Affordable rates and a seaside location are enough for some travelers, but it's worth comparing rates with the more modern and well-equipped Hotel Puchet

Scene

The charming adornments in the lobby don't carry over into rooms

This family-run value hotel feels dated from the outside in. Green window shutters, intricate lattice around verandas, and large trees and potted plants give the exterior some much-needed curb appeal. The lobby and reception area give off a more charming vibe than the minimally furnished rooms do. A framed vintage map, gothic-style chandeliers, and a dark-wood secretary with books add character to the space. The on-site restaurant is a spacious white-tiled area with simple wooden furniture and more chandeliers. A terrace outdoors has a bizarre mix of tables, games such as ping-pong, and one lone treadmill. Adjacent is the pleasant pool deck lined with loungers and tables, and overlooking the water. There are mostly families, couples, and older travelers staying at the hotel, though due to the value, waterfront location, and proximity to bars, a few party-goers may take up residence here, too.

Location

Right on the bay, but a long walk from the Sunset Strip

Located on San Antonio Bay, guests of Hotel Tagomago have instant beach access right outside their door -- and great views, too. This waterfront location also means that ferry access is right by the hotel, so heading across the bay to explore more of San Antonio is easy. A bus stop is near the hotel as well. The walk to the Sunset Strip is doable but a long 33 minutes. By car, the drive to hotspots such as Cafe Mambo and Cafe Del Mar is just 10 minutes. Of course there are things within walking distance, too. Urban Lounge is 2 minutes away by foot, while Alter Ibiza and Ocean Beach Ibiza are about a 10-minute walk.

Rooms

Comfortably sized rooms with minimal, dated decor

There are various selections at this 114-room hotel from a standard double room to four-person family room. All rooms are spacious and decorated in minimal furniture, mustard-colored accent walls, and dated curtains, plus big sunset photos in most. Air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi are standard amenities, but notably missing are mini-fridges and safes -- though the latter can be rented for a fee. Not all rooms have a balcony or veranda, and rooms that do may find that balconies are Juliet-style, unfurnished, and small, or that their veranda is shared with adjacent rooms -- great fore those traveling with friends next door, but not so much if there are strangers on either side. Sea views are available from some, while others may overlook a building. Note that ground-level rooms may experience noise from passersby. Bathrooms are adequately sized and surprisingly modern given the aesthetic of the rooms. All bathrooms have a white pedestal sink, clean tile throughout, hairdryers, and free bath products in pouches. Depending on room style, bathrooms either have shower/tub combos or a walk-in showers. Some have a bidet, too.

Features

Free loungers at the sea-view pool, plus a restaurant

Hotel Tagomago has minimal entertainment features. The pool is well-sized with a separate shallow end for kids, and loungers are available to guests free of charge. From the pool deck, there are great views of the bay. By the pool, there are a ping-pong table, pool table, and air hockey. There is also a singular treadmill outside by the game tables that feels oddly misplaced. Free Wi-Fi is a welcome amenity, though reception is spotty. A single computer is in the lobby for guest use. Previous guests have also reported that live entertainment is hit or miss -- some have seen it, while others note it wasn't available on their trip. The hotel bar, adorned in wood paneling and red armchairs, feels like a step back in time, but there's ample seating and prices are reasonable. The on-site restaurant receives mixed reviews, but the breakfast buffet has a fair amount of options and half-board options are available. Tables are also located outside on a terrace for alfresco dining.
