The 33-room mid-range Hotel Luz Isla is a good value, ideal for anyone looking for a no-fuss, quiet spot with contemporary rooms and walking proximity to the waterfront. It's one of the older hotels in the area, but thanks to frequent updates, rooms are up-to-date and attractive. Rooms have flat-screen TVs, hairdryers, and AC, plus balconies in most. This property sees a ton of repeat guests that are known on a first-name basis, speaking to the high level of hospitality. Outside of a small TV lounge, public spaces consist of a breakfast room serving free buffets and an attached corner cafe with bar and terrace seating. The lack of a pool is a downside for families with young kids (try the nearby Sinbad Hotel for a pool). Wi-FI is free, while parking is available for a fee.
Scene
A small, friendly spot popular with couples and budget travelers
When Hotel Lux Isla opened in the 1960s, it was one of the first hotels in the area (if you're lucky, reception will show you a vintage postcard of the hotel). Over 50 years later, the exterior has barely changed, though the yearly upkeep and updates have helped keep the insides from looking overly dated. The tile floors with colorful design accents, breakfast room with citrus wall art and black plastic chairs, and wicker seating in the lobby are certainly on the older side, and are in stark contrast to the strikingly contemporary guest rooms. This value spot is open all year and typically draws European couples between 30 and 50, many of which are repeat guests and on a first name basis with reception. However, for those who want a place with an pool, it's worth checking out the rates at Talamanca's Sinbad Hotel.
Location
Quiet location in Talamanca, within a five-minute walk of the waterfront
Hotel Lux Isla is located in the quiet area of Talamanca, surrounded by a mix of hotels and residential buildings. It's less than five minutes on foot to the water, though there's not much of a beach here due to the rocky coastline. However, there is a small boardwalk area with restaurants and bars where guests can enjoy a drink or bite to eat. Additionally, a local car rental company and ATM are a two-minute walk from the hotel. - 12-minute drive to Old Town
Rooms
Surprisingly contemporary rooms with thoughtful features
Parts of Hotel Lux Isla may appear dated, but not the rooms. The 33 rooms here are surprisingly contemporary and have slightly varying color schemes and design elements; they even manage to make tinted and graphic print frosted glass look stylish. Plus, they keep it easy by not selling rooms based on views -- it's either with or without balcony. While the photo decor theme showcasing different spots in the Balearic Islands is also present in the rooms, Hotel Lux Isla brings in a little local flavor by placing the cement sculpture work of a local artist on the wall of each room. Expect porcelain tile floors, glass block-walled bathrooms, and touch AC controls. Mini-fridges, water bottles, closets with safes, and flat-screen TVs with satellite channels are also provided. Bathrooms keep the contemporary look with sleek fixtures, magnifying mirrors, and wood-paneled shower floors, while amenities are well-covered with toiletries, hairdryers, combs, vanity kits, and dental kits.Upgrades to Premium Deluxe Rooms get a larger balcony with wood laminate floors and some bathrooms will even have a small window to the outside.
Features
Attached cafe and free breakfast buffet, but no pool
All of the hotel's (limited) features and public spaces are located on the ground floor. The corner space is occupied by a simple and cute cafe and bar with terrace seating. It's open late and serves espresso, booze, and snacks like pizza, ice cream, and sandwiches in a relaxed atmosphere. Glass doors in the back of the cafe lead directly into the uncomplicated breakfast room where the free hot and cold breakfast buffet is served. It's nothing fancy, but it gets the job done. On the other side of the front desk, there's a quiet lobby area with tan wicker bucket seats, a TV, and two computers that guests can use for free (printing costs extra at the front desk), and a small honor bar filled with soft drinks and water. This area is also where you'll find the courtesy showers -- free for anyone checking in early or late. Late check-ins can also request a cold meal (a.k.a. sandwich or salad) to be waiting in their room for an extra fee. Unfortunately, there are no swimming pool or game area on-site. The hotel used to offer free airport transfers, but not any longer. Anyone looking for parking will have to pay a daily fee and be given a remote to access the private lot. Other optional features at a extra fee include laundry service and bike or stroller rental. Expect free Wi-Fi and a no-pet policy.
